re: Am I just getting older, or does popular culture really suck as much as it seems?

cell phones, it has zapped the creativity out of people. no more going in the garage with your buddies and creating a band and having a jam session.
I have 2 houses within my small block where kids do this. My in-laws next door neighbor has kids who also do this. Kids also still play outside, adults are just looking at their phones too much to notice

My kids listen to 80s music more than the current genre. Now that's partly due to me telling them the 80s was the greatest musical decade.
They watch their shows on streaming services. None of them watch any reality shows or the like.
I still think my childhood was much better.

We had Alice in Chains and Nirvana.
Yes, you are getting older.
Pop culture is defined as what young people get excited about. Per the OT, these days that's ink and piercings, soy, hip-hop, Civics w annoying exhaust, etc. But who cares? Let em have their fun.

A lot of things have gotten worse in my opinion. Part of it is a bias and nostalgia about the past (which everyone has to varying degrees). Part of it is that I've changed. And partly I think some things are just worse.
Do you ever see a female with mutilated lips and think it's not worse???
With regard to popular culture, I think much of that is female-driven. Females have an immense amount of power, and they get more and more attention through social media, and influence and copy each other.
It also makes me think about how much things change, and how so many things must have been lost to history over the years. I mean that open-endedly.

popular culture, especially music, is more and more geared toward people who may not even speak english. it's why you'll hear a lot of pop songs using less than 40-50 unique words. radio, television, etc are all dying industries trying to cut costs and expand their consumer base. the result is cheap, shitty content made for a less discerning audience.
kids these days aren't to blame for any of that. the internet has fractured the alternative scene into a thousand niche communities. a kid that would have been into grunge in the 90s now listens to math rock or norwegian melodic doom metal or something. instead of cool shows making it on public access or adult swim people have podcasts and youtube.

I guess I’m the old virgin man without a life but I still dig the 1980’s. I can hear a random 80’s song and can tell you what year it came out and what my life was up to at that time. I guess being young attracts you to the emotions and sounds of that particular time in your life.

TV isn’t dying- the last 20 years have been the golden age of TV and it has put out better content than Hollywood

There's still good new music coming out but it's more under the radar stuff than it used to be.
And let's not pretend pop music in the 80's and 90's was exactly great (insufferable R&B, boy bands, dance music like C&C Music Factory, a lot of REALLY bad hair metal bands, etc.).
The thing I actually envy the kids about these days is their ability to find new music. Back in our day, you either heard it on the radio, word of mouth, or maybe someone shoots you a mix tape with some stuff on it. Now? Sheeeiiitttt....they literally run algorithms on these streaming services to identify your mood/taste and choose songs matching those signatures. It's insane. I use Tidal...I can play a short personal playlist and, when it's over, Tidal's algo takes over and feeds me a bunch of songs I've never heard before that I actually like and add to my favorites. It's insane.
TV is definitely better now than it was when we were young.
Movies absolutely suck now.
Social media is the debil.
Most fashion today is just recycling the shite older generations wore.
So, yeah, pop culture absolutely sucks now but I think music is one of the areas that sucks the least.

I hate what American culture has become. We have become soft as a people, and our pop culture reflects it.
My family likes The Voice and America's Got Talent. I'll sit and watched it sometimes, and it's sob story after sob story, and everybody is racing to virtue signal. At this point, if a male performer doesn't shed extreme crocodile tears for some reason, he stands out. Shows are full of overt leftist propaganda, and satanic symbolism. It's gotten out of hand.

Hey there was some good ones also. Poison, Bon Jovi, Cinderella were legit. If you consider GnR and Tesla hair bands, them also, of course, Motley Cru and Skid Row also.
My dad is in his mid 70s. When I was an infant my grandad came over and noticed a Led Zeppelin record in the house. Mom and dad both told me he blew a head gasket and started screaming at my dad that he’d have devil music in the house with a newborn, that it was time to grow up

I use to make fun of my younger brother n law, he’s about 40, for listening to Lincoln Park back in his college years, now I listen to them all the time

For sure, man....just pointing out that we tend to only remember the good shite and forget about the bad (that we probably tried to ignore back then).

American pop culture is trash outside of College football, NFL football, and College Basketball.
