Just saw a video yesterday on youtube where someone was paddleboarding in one of those crystal clear rivers in florida and the gator kept following them and biting at the paddle when theyd try to push the gator away

Heck no.
I don’t even like getting in the ocean anymore. God put those beasts in water and us on land for a reason.

The alligators never bothered me
However I do have an irrational fear of stepping on a giant alligator snapping turtle
Same for stingrays when I’m wade fishing in brackish water

the closer you get to their height level, i.e., sitting in a kayak verses standing, the less fearful they are of you
I would agree with that.

Had a 12 footer almost flip me once. But I startled her when the yak scrapped her tail in shallow water

close calls with moccasins. Also rattlesnakes are excellent swimmers.
Fish/swam/boat around alligators all the time but the first moc I see, it’s time to wrap it up. My dad and his padna had two Mocs fall from a tree into a Jon boat in the atchafalaya back in the 70’s. His padna unloaded 5 rounds from a 357 at them. Missed the snakes but sank the boat. They spent the night in the swamp. When it starts raining Mocs I’m done

You are more likely to have a negative encounter on land close to a river than in a kayak on the river.

Alligators mostly eat from dusk to dawn. Maybe a day trip would be ok for you.

Yea, but if you stay away from gator infested water. There is a zero % chance of getting ate by a gator.
They are actually a greater threat on land, and the only close calls I've ever had with gators have been when I unwittingly stumble on a nesting mama on or near river banks.

American crocs,
In mexico have fricked some people up, and killed a couple pretty recently. They are not as aggressive as nile or salties but they are very big and not to be fricked with.

Kayaking with gators is one thing, diving with them is another!
I saw a tv show were some guys were diving with nile crocs in an african river. They went under huge mats of reeds where the crocs had tunnels they would hang out in. They mentioned the only time they thought they were in danger from the crocs is when getting in and out of the water.

The first time I saw a gator in the 'wild' was when I went waterskiing in the Amite river with some friends. The gators looked to be juveniles and they were on the bank. As we sped by, they took off down the bank. At first I was more freaked out at how fast they can run, than the fact we were waterskiing in a river with gators in it.

I recently learned it’s a popular activity to kayak in Florida’s rivers which contain gators/crocs. The last thing I want to do is kayak with gators. I don’t want to be anywhere near them. But everyone I talked to says it’s not a big deal and that they’ve either done it before or would do it. Am I irrationally afraid or am I the only rational one?
Yes. Aligators are pretty laid back except when they have babies around...they mostly try to avoid people. Dogs, on the other hand, not so much. They will attack a dog in a second but its rare for them to attack a person who ain't messing with them.

Thats true, I grew up on a lake in Florida. Only once did I have a gator make a lunge towards me. I saw my dogs run from them a few times while fishing

one will see you later and one will see you afterwhile.

I kayak fish all over SELA. I see gators all the time. I stay away from them as much as possible, but honestly they leave you alone 99.9% of the time. Big ones don’t bother me. An animal that big isn’t concerned with me. It’s the med ones I try to avoid.
