This works both ways. If they draw their guns and wait for him to reach for his before shooting him there would undoubtedly be people asking why they didn't try to apprehend him before he pulled the gun.
Yes, it does, and you're right, which is why I've advocated they should have followed protocol, whatever it is. There was an optimal solution, and perhaps that was it, but I'll wait and here from BRPD.

Has someone posted the very close and clear video from Twitter yet? Didn't see it in last couple pages

Wouldn't really be following the use of force continuum if they went from taser to spray..wouldn't have any effect anyway, probably.

Man, shite. I just thought of something. Whatever Fournette thinks about this situation is what everybody should think. We need that dude's head in the right place.

People keep saying this, but we've seen time after time they roll up guns drawn in situations like this, but now it is a ridiculous proposition? I don't get it.
And the same people that are bitching about them not drawing from the beginning also bitch about them going in guns blazing in other situations.
We saw a thread about this exact thing a while ago. I can't remember exactly when, or where, but there was a situation about a year or so ago where someone was supposedly brandishing a fire arm in a park. The cops come and they immediately have their firearms out and the guy gets shot. People were bitching that the cop didn't deescalate the situation. Perhaps they could have used a taser or another non lethal method like a take down is what was said by opponents.
I don't know what the protocol is for a take down.
I'm almost certain they figured he had a gun. Maybe they thought after the taser the take down was the best option to avoid the guy pulling his gun. Then they couldn't get his hand controlled and it went by the gun. If they draw on him instead they could risk bystanders getting hit.
We have a number of cops on this board. I really want to know what the protocol is in this kind of situation.

Do you morons want cops to do NOTHING but watch while felons run wild?
Honestly, yes they should do this for a while. Basically, back off the the crime ridden poverty stricken areas.
Let them kill each other and the police do nothing. Show the world that all on some level, everyone needs to follow police officers instructions: hands out the pocket, get down on the ground, spread your arms and legs, don't move.
Maybe then people will realize the shite show that cops have to deal with in a daily basis and all this bullshite protesting for a guy that is a career criminal, or any other future bad guys people want to make martyrs of will go away.

Wow so come to find out I went to HS with the officer and used to be good friends with his wife. Great people and I'm upset this is happening to them.

The government killed someone "for playing stupid games"?
People who use that phrase are stupid as hell and disturbingly often are cops IRL. So flippant.

But that's the thing. There's no mysterious "protocol" to follow to the T in these situations. The situations are fluid. This is where training comes in. They are trained to attempt to apprehend the suspect without using lethal force if given the opportunity. The tackling officer saw an opportunity, they just weren't able to control him quick enough.

And how many times have they been chastised and criticized for doing exactly this.
Yet they do it all the time and people in threads just like this defend them all the time.
My point is that there is or should be a protocol that they're trained to follow. If they broke protocol they'll need to explain it. If they didn't then they'll have nothing to worry about, but people in this thread lose their shite if you even suggest the officers could have done something wrong.
