The government shouldn't be legally allowed to impose consequences on somebody for using their free speech. I can not see any point for there to be a first amendment.

I do think it is a bit overboard, but I would have to think after being kicked out of the sorority and people all around campus would know who she is and what she did, she would have likely left from there anyway.
But she can still go to another school so it's not like she has been denied the opportunity to get her degree. I am not sure if this situation will follow her for the rest of her life, but I think she did more damage to herself than anything.

I don't see how a public university can expel a student for speech made off campus.

Even though your argument is garbage, your point does have some merit. And this is why....
In Brandenburg v. Ohio, the Supreme Court held that the government cannot punish inflammatory speech unless it intentionally and effectively provokes a crowd to immediately carry out violent and unlawful action.
Will be interesting to see if a suit gets filed over this as "protected speech".

While it is being reported that she was expelled it is almost certain that she withdrew since there has been no time for them to go through the process of expelling a student.
I doubt that the school will have to do anything to prevent her from coming back.
