Everyone pees sitting down. Stop trying so hard to be unique!

It depends. Do you do them at the same time?

Easy. I'm the only product line manager in the country for a 24/7 operation. I have some weekends where operations are not active and I'm able to get away. Nothing consistent tho.

Yeah, I understand, but if the line is critical, your company should have a competent alternative in place in case you disappear.

Wish that was an option. I have to be contactable 24/7 in case of problems.

I bet you're not getting paid 24/7 for providing this service.

They do, unless he's working for a group of lunatics. And he could easily get away for some time. But then he wouldn't feel as important and he couldn't justify complaining about his situation. Self-fulfilling prophecy of whiny bullshite.

In brief, I've been relocated to another country and am the only person in the country who knows the job. There is nobody else to hand things over to on weekends. When I want vacation I make arrangements to have someone flown in from another country to cover for me.

I'm paid 24/7. I don't pay US taxes (company does). All my bills are paid by the company (here and in the US). My flights for vacations are paid by the company. I'm also given a goods and services allowance based on the local cost of living.

So about $10 US per week?

So now we get to the crux of the matter. Earlier you made it sound like loved ones were pestering you with "well meaning texts", now it comes out that you sold your free time to your employer. Yeah you're not allowed to bitch about that either. You're a grownup who made a conscious decision. If the money isn't worth what you're giving up for it then make a change. But again, you're not unique or special just because you enjoy being alone.

ETA: confused you for the op, you never bitched about loved ones. I stand by the rest of it though.

To get my alone time, I go to the gym at 4:00 AM, put in the earbuds, turn up the volume, and don't talk to anyone.

How do you guys politely, yet firmly, tell people to back off and leave you be?

It is pretty much impossible. I'll have my door closed on a conference call or just to eat lunch for 10 minutes and people still come in wanting something. I let it go at work, thats just how it is. At home, I check the work cell phone/email every now and then. If it is something really important, I'll respond, if not, it waits until the next morning/Monday morning.

No. Cost of living is more than I was paying in Colorado. Ex-pat living is not cheap.

Afraid so. But if you want to get a dog, you can beat the shite out of that to feel better. Or a wife depending on which country you're in.

I go 1-3x per week and often often prefer it by myself. If I really want off the grid I go camping/fishing in the Adirondacks with zero cell signal = See you later!

Just do whatever you need to do to make you feel better. You're not physically hurting anyone. If someone takes offense that you didn't answer them swiftly enough, that's THEIR problem, not yours.

**unless it's your wife or kids, then you just have to suck that shite up like the rest of us miserable bastards**
