If you're not buying shell, or a blucher or some shoe to wear in less formal situations, I'm not sure why one would go Alden in that price range. Lasts are too chunky for my tastes, and their QC issues with stitching and dye aren't exactly rare.

I can't see buying shoes online. The fit is never right.

I prefer the chunkier Alden lasts. To each his own. Sorry for assuming gender, btw.

A friend of mine has a nice clothing store here and sells Edmonds line. I buy shoes and clothes from that store so they don't mind fitting me for shoes sold on the AE website. They are generally shoes they don't have and would have to order anyway.

Many of their lasts similar, so I know what size I wear in those.

I think I’m done with AE. I ordered a pair of Dalton boots in October that were “in stock”. It took nearly a month to get delivered and were total shite with numerous, obvious blemishes. I returned them to the store and had to wait nearly 3 weeks for the replacements. The leather is subpar for a $400+ shoe and squeaks like crazy.
I’m getting Alden’s from now on.

Dress shoes should have leather soles.

I just got another pair last week.
The website said they had a 4-week backorder so I called the store in Canal Place. The guy had them in stock and even shipped them to my house.
So far so good.

I make $200k a year and won’t pay $600 for shoes.

I’ve started having half rubber soles put on my dress shoes. Walking around the city in leather soles can be dangerous.

If you maintain a good pair of shoes correctly they will last forever.

When I asked about in store stock, there was one pair that may or not have been available in SF. I’m sure they have those orthopedic joints you stunt in stock tho.
(I’m shipping your beer tomorrow so be on the lookout)

I bought a pair of lightly used AE Dalton boots on eBay for 150. I love them but they are definitely not worth 400.

I have John Varvatos and To Boot NY boots that are the same price range and the AE are not even in the same league of quality. The Daltons are sub $200 shoes.

Cobbler in Brandon showed me the difference between the AE's and the J&M's, C-H's, and cheaper shoes. Had a CH broken down. Showed me the parts, like the welt, that were made of paper. No paper in the AE shoes and better brands.
