re: All time debate: Tundra vs. F150 vs. Silverado/Sierra

when I was in similar shoes as you before last Christmas, I wanted a Tundra.
After doing my due diligence, I wound up with a Silverado.
I'm not saying anything negative against the other brands. Trail Boss package sold me on the Silverado.

All time debate: Tundra vs. F150 vs. Silverado/Sierra
Chevrolet Silverado introduced in MY 1999
Ford F-150 introduced in MY 1948
Toyota Tundra introduced in MY 2000
So all-time results means the Ford clearly wins simply because they have 1.75 times the year models to choose from than the other two models combined.
Here's the scorecard:
1948-1998 Ford wins 50 times in a row.
So all-time there's no way either GM or Toyota could catch them since then.

I'm not sure you can get a new Tundra with a V8.

I think the Silverado is the best buy for full sized trucks now, depending on how decent your local dealer is.
Hearing great things about the 2.7L turbo motor from a reliability standpoint, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy a 4 cylinder full sized truck.

We do know that?
Dodge has had issues since I can remember. I bought one in 97 and it broke down 3 times before 36K miles. Said I would never do that again. Bought another Dodge in 2004 and it had shifting issues and at least 4 times I had to bring it in before 60K miles.
I will NEVER buy a dodge again.

Dependability and reliability - Tundra
Bells and whistles that aren't fully tested - the domestics
I'm not sure if this meet universal agreement, but this is always in the back of my mind on this
Toyota lags pretty much everyone in bells and whistles, sometimes mindblowingly so (the GX comes to mind), but you absolutely know what you're getting.
Toyota (and Lexus) don't generally excite me - I don't think about them. But if you've had a vehicle you have to think about all the time because you're consistently worried that something is going to go awry - you know that never having to think about it is a benefit too.

I can understand your feelings. But to me, that’s 20 years ago and people seem to like their Dodge trucks now. And they sure look good.

Which one would you pick? Car reviews rank the Ram high, but we all know that it has dependability issues, so that it a deal-killer for me.
Silverado or Sierra with the 3.0L Diesel is IMO the best all round full sized truck now if you put a lot of highway miles on it. Diesels cost more to maintain, but I have a relative with a Silverado diesel and it gets astoundingly good mileage. Like 30+ on the highway when unloaded. That's a huge savings for high mileage rigs over any of the gas powered models from any brand.
My next favorite is probably the Ford Powerboost F-150. The highway mileage isn't great, but that's not the value it adds IMO. The on board power generator is a really nice add and makes this a very compelling option. If you put a lot of city miles on the truck or don't drive very much....this might be the best option. Ford traditionally lets you option almost any color or configuration you want too.
Ram looks the best, and their quality has improved dramatically over the years. I think they have the best entry level, non-turbo base engine out there with the 3.6L V6. So I would gravitate towards Ram if the goal is to have a simple, more basic truck. I don't think the HEMI is a great option anymore. It's an older engine and needs an update.
The Tundra is sort of controversial. I'm not sure what they are targeting here - maybe the F-150 with the turbo motors? Or the Silverado ZR2 with their TRD Pro package? But they fall short against both of them. The latest design has some shortcomings and I'm not sure this one is going to appeal to very many people beyond the Toyota faithful. So I suspect they are going to update it very soon again to correct some of the areas where they've gotten negative feedback. One thing you can usually depend on Tundra for is a reduced likelihood of defects and issues long term. So that's the selling point I guess.
Nissan just isn't trying very much anymore. I want to like it because it's made in the deep south. Their V8 is very powerful, but it will be out of production within a few years.

The only drawback to the Tundra is the gas mileage and really, that's not enough of a difference to matter. I will never drive anything but a Tundra again.
This. All of it.

Tundra introduced a new engine this year. Nobody knows how reliable it might be.

I think all they offer is a turbo V6 in the new ones

What’s wrong with Rams? I’m in the market and haven’t ever heard this.

Nothing.
This is something people who haven't bought a new truck in 20 years say.
Ram is the best truck on the road in 2023. I'm a lifelong GMC owner, but my last two trucks have been Rams. Next one will likely be the updated 3500.

Used truck prices are fricking insane. 39K for a 2019 Tundra with 40K miles.
I saw a baw pull into a grocery store parking lot. I told him I was considering buying one, and asked if he liked his. Loved it, but had a jeep also and had to sell one. the Jeep was paid off. Payoff was $16500, on a 2015, double cab 4x4. Long story short, I paid it off in October and just drove it to BR.
Deals are out there. This one booked at $26,500.

I've owned 2 Rams. They were fine even 10+ years ago

Love my 2018 Tundra.
I’m not sure I would be a buyer of the newer turbo models but based on reliability I should not have to find out for a while.
I like to use my truck, not work on it.
