Knowing a few who don't drink doesn't disprove the fact that fraternity/Greek life promotes binge drinking.

?? I don't think you do. Unrelated meaning outside of the control, or even mere involvement, of another. Unless there's some indication that members of other Greek organizations were involved in forcing this kid to drink, allegedly.
lol.

There is a Interstate Protest over a Non Guilty Verdict for a cop. There is a thread for that. Just waiting for the violence.

That's not exclusive to non-Greek students though.
Even if it's rare, the only 2 people to have died from hazing at LSU are Greek students.

I'm having a hard time seeing why people don't understand this temporary suspension.
Seems like everyone is reading it as a punishment to the greek system and not as LSU doing some PR CYA.
quote:
I understand why the believe it is unfair, but this punishment shouldn't be a surprise.
This isn't a punishment. The moves to curtail greek life come later. This is all PR firefighting. Period.
quote:
LSU is trying to make it appear they're taking a hardline stance on this thing, and F. King is trying to minimize LSU's risk and any national PR backlash.
It's not so much a hard line stance as it's LSU can't take the swarm of media catching a greek party or function with binge drinking right after this happened. That's the vast majority of the calculus that goes into making this decision. It's smart from the LSU admin (for once).
And you're right, this covers the greek system too. Another incident of injury/death from drinking soon after would out the entire system at risk. The calls to disband them would be deafening and LSU would take a reputation hit they could barely afford to bare.

The last thing LSU needs right now is LSU-sanctioned parties for students on campus with alcohol. It's a terrible look, so LSU is controlling one of the few things it can realistically enforce.
The ban extends to off-campus activities as well.
So if you're a chapter that has been faithfully following the rules, despite the fact that that makes for a fairly lame and/or costly (paying for security, vendors, renting space, etc) experience, thus you're already living under the restrictions (probably caused by someone else's stupidity in the past), you should now be banned from social activities completely because some douchebags in Phi Delt did some stupid shite.
Yeah.

Yeah.
This guy gets it. So does that shut down Homecoming for them as well?

Yeah.
Surely you're smart enough to understand the optics of an alcohol infused Greek event a week or two removed from an alcohol-related Greek hazing death. Like Duke said, this punishment is LSU trying to cover their tail for the next week or two.
Also, if you want Greek life to continue at LSU, the last thing you need is an another alcohol related incident in the next few weeks. This particular decision sucks in the short term, but it saves Greeks in the long run and, more importantly, limits LSU's liability.

Recognizing the general realities of life does not equate to surrendering to unfairness.

Living in Louisiana promotes binge drinking. Being young promotes binge drinking. You think those dudes with white sunglasses and chin strap beards tailgating on Nicholson every Saturday were Gammas?

Hopefully lsu won't tear down the Greek houses and they can be used to benefit the less fortunate

Because kids who aren't Greek don't drink at all...

"Related" in any practical meaning indicates some level of control over, or at least involvement in, another's actions. That's the very crux of the issue.
Membership in the same "system" doesn't bestow on the girls at Chi O the right to monitor or influence Phi Delts hazing activities, yet they are punished for those same activities without any ability or right to affect those activities. Hence, accountability for actions one has no right or ability to prevent.
It's essentially Un-American.
There I said it.

Curious where you would draw the line? Am I "related to" a sex offender if he lives in my subdivision? Sounds kind of ridiculous to me to say just because they are all part of the same "club" that they all share vicarious liability for what each other do.
If Florida football players got someone killed at a drinking party the whole SEC wouldn't get a suspension just by virtue of all being part of the SEC.

Your logic is completely skewed here. This isn't a punishment... yet. It's a halt on greek activities to investigate the system for potential issues that could have been overlooked. They HAVE to halt activities. Could you imagine what would happen if another fraternity kid has a close call shortly after this incident and LSU didn't stop everything and examine current hazing & possible alcohol abuse in the Greek system.
It's a "Stop, take a step back, ask is this an issue with just one fraternity or all of them, how do we correct this for the future so no other young students have to die from peer pressured drinking"
