re: Aldi purchases 11 acres on ONeal Lane

I like Aldi, but I'm afraid many in Louisiana won't get it. It's the epitome of what the OT would find trashy. I think some people see keywords like organic and locally sourced thinking Aldi will be a grocery only Target. Instead at Aldi, it's going to be like shopping for Tasteeos instead of Cheerios sometimes.

To keep costs low, its very little selection, not many name brand items, very basic isles, food items are in shipping packages i.e. sometimes dirty/dusty, some food packages won't even be printed in color, etc. If it tells you anything about the customer base, Aldi will be 20-30% cheaper than Walmart for like items. Aldi, in my experience, also has stock availability issues at times. I think part of their business model is if they can't buy it at certain price, they just flat out won't stock it. But I think everyone is used to this by now... they just won't have meat at all times.

I like Aldi, I'll be shopping there. The good thing is this will be a new ground-up store so it will flow better, be cleaner (for a little while anyway), etc.

I like it, it's a no frills place. I don't get over to that side of town much, so not sure how often I'll shop there when it opens.

So, it's a downscale Trader Joes. Trader Joes has this exact model except they focus their marketing on hipsters. Most people don't know the model is to sell only generic brands with fancy labeling and niche marketing. There was a great article on them in the WSJ a while back.

Aldi in my town is located in the most expensive retail real estate area. They moved into a closed Ryan's Restaurant.

People always over hype new things that come to their town.

We have a great choice for groceries, with so many options, but Aldis is a good place to begin your shopping, and finish off at a local chain.
