Given that "headlights off" is a rumor, I'll wait before putting him in the noose.

That said, how do not see 2 people in the street with them on?

Drunk? Distracted?

And, if they were off, drunk sounds right...

I read comments about this on X when it happened. People said the 2 didn't cross in the crosswalk nor did they activate lights.

As far as being drunk, speculation is the victims were, not the cop.

Could go either way.

Love how folks jump on the cop without knowing a damn thing...

everything I have seen indicates that they did cross in a crosswalk and that the lights were inoperable — many comments trashing the local city council for allowing the lights to stay broken and lamenting that it takes an accident like this to get action

In newer cars with automatic headlights, they often have Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) that use the headlights at about half power. Can't tell you how many times in the last 20 years that I've bumped my headlight switch off of auto with my knee, or had it left off after a routine service, and the DRLs were just bright enough that it took me quite a while to realize my main headlights were not on.

What is sad is that this was early Saturday morning, meaning late Friday July 4th night. These two kids were probably out celebrating and then doing the responsible thing and walking back to their condo instead of driving.

Maybe they crossed at the wrong place maybe not. Maybe the crosswalk lights were working maybe not. Maybe the cop had his lights on or off. Either way two young people are no longer here, no longer get to live the life they and their parents had dreamed.

seriously, i dunno how many people i've seen at night driving with just the running lights on, so no rear lights at all, and super dim up front. It's always newer cars.

Yeah if you’re working private security, why are you allowed to use your public cruiser?

Presumably he was working as a PD officer, just an extra/off duty detail. It’s like the police cruisers parked at Wal Mart or grocery stores. They’re “off duty” but still working as a member of the department.

Having the car there is like 80% of the point.

I mean, if you're walking home at 3am, you're likely drunk. And if reports are accurate, the crosswalk lights were broken. Still, being drunk and walking isnt usually a death sentence, though statistically, it is more dangerous than drunk driving. ( source: Malcolm Gladwell)

There's absolutely no question cops will lie for cops; that's part of the job.

With 2 dead kids, that may give them a bit of pause.

It’s really dark through there. Word around here is they were intoxicated, he was not. There were witnesses behind him that say the crosswalk was never activated. They just walked in front of him.

I suspect that is most likely.

Would be curious if there's actually eyewitness accounts to the headlight rumor...

All that said, it's still misuse of public property. Security detail is one of the most corrupt things going in policing these days.

Are you saying that no company/business should be able to hire the police for any reason?

From Gemini:

"Police officers are often permitted to use their assigned patrol cars for limited personal use, a practice known as a "take-home vehicle program". This is generally considered a fringe benefit by police departments, and is sometimes viewed as a crime-fighting tool. The specific rules and limitations regarding personal use vary by department and may include restrictions on the type of use, distance traveled, and parking requirements. "

In other words, a police cruiser present when working private security gigs can be a crime deterrent, which the public benefits from. It's also a fringe benefit that helps attract potential hires without increasing base salary.

I personally am EXTREMELY cautious when driving anywhere near Flora Bama, or the front beach road in PK/OB/GS in general. Especially at that time of night on the night of July 4th. And this off-duty officer should know how easy it is to hit someone on that road if you aren't paying attention. I'm not trying to put all blame on him bc we don't know the whole story, but he really fricked up. We went to Flora Bama around noon the day after this, and I overheard a couple of the employees talking about how they saw the bodies in the street. Absolutely awful.

I just assumed this was all basic knowledge everyone knew. Hoped it helped that poster figure it out. Rainwater also helps trees grow.
