Give Huntsville to Tennessee and I bet Alabama drops like a Bama fan fighting after a Bama loss.

frick those Tennessee hillbillies. They come down to Huntsville, probably to visit their first Chick-fil-a or Cabela's, and clog up the roads because they're not used to traffic lights and turn lanes.

Alabama has a 89-percent graduation rate

A high percentage and that's good. But it's also for Alabama high schools, so not really all that difficult. The same applies to Louisiana, Mississippi, etc.

a 1,143 median SAT score,

Median SAT score is a crap statistic. Many states require all students to take the SAT. These states all do relatively poorly compared to Alabama since in Alabama it's only those headed to college that take the SAT.

and one of every six adults 25 and older has a bachelor’s degree.

16% with a bachelor degree is pretty low. Most states have a higher number.

You left off "Average percentage of ACT takers meeting subject benchmarks." Alabama scores 31% here which is pretty abysmal.

Like most internet rating lists this one is awful.

The smokies are nice, I guess. Otherwise our Dollar Generals are the same. And, we have a coastal area in AL.

I like Nashville for a quick visit. I'd rather live in Huntsville, hands down.

I'm assuming the TN people that are driving around like they've never been on a paved road, are not coming to huntsville from "big cities" with chickfila's.

Yet titusville/cocoa beach don't skew Florida

Given the relative populations of the two states compared to the facilities involved, and the fact that Huntsville is the research and development hub of NASA sucking up 10% of their overall budget compared to the act of supporting launches being a relative technician role (KSC’s budget is a seventh of Huntsville) not requiring advanced degrees....

Well yeah

Titusville and cocoa beach doesn’t have that much pull as a skew.

In a study where New Jersey is considered the smartest state, you can pretty much assume the entire thing is inaccurate.

I know they have Princeton, but that can't make up for the rest of New Jersey...

Good God. I get the one guy´s comment, but you purportedly live in Boston, correct?

New Jersey has always been one of the richest areas of the US. Always.

Well, whatever. I'm not really in the mood to get into a classic OT my southern state is better than your southern state argument today.

I mostly just wanted to take a quick jab at TN, and move on. I actually like the state of TN, pretty well. My wife and I have discussed moving to Chattanooga in the past, and we visit Nashville 2-3 times a year for a change of scenery. But, seriously, the people we get from TN in huntsville, are mostly people from just across the state line. They're usually driving around in jacked up trucks not knowing where they're going, and clogging up traffic.

In Payscale's annual college report ( LINK) rating universities by graduates' average starting salary and mid-career pay, Alabama/Huntsville is just a few spots ahead of LSU in both.

Tuscaloosa baws bring up the rear (take that anyway you want to ).

Starting / Mid-Career Pay

#205 Huntsville 57,500 / 103,900

#225 LSU 54,800 / 102,900

#359 Tuscaloosa 52,300 / 97,400
