PRITCHARD, Ala. — Apparently some places in Alabama are really serious about residents mowing their lawns. A 70-year-old woman from Pritchard, Alabama was arrested last week for not mowing her lawn or responding to a citation. But the whole thing was just a terrible misunderstanding. The woman, who wanted to remain anonymous, was placed in handcuffs and put in the back of a police car for not responding to a citation she received for overgrown grass and brush at her home. Unfortunately, the woman no longer owns the home where the citation was issued. She claimed she had already produced the appropriate documentation to prove that the home no longer belonged to her. “I supplied that information,” she said. “No one said this is not enough… it’s the wrong thing you have… nobody said nothing.” A warrant was subsequently issued for her arrest. The police showed up to her house last week to arrest her “like I was some gangster, some murderer,” the woman said. The situation was awkward for the police as well. “Unfortunately she was on the list of persons to be picked up under warrants issued by the courts, and we just don’t have the discretion to ignore the court’s orders,” Prichard Chief of Staff Phillip Stiell said. The woman spent a few hours in jail with no food, water, or chance to take her medication. She called the experience a “nightmare.” Once they realized their mistake, the Pritchard police tried to get the woman out as quickly as possible. “It’s not common that we arrest persons of that age,” said Stiell. “But recognizing that was the case, we did what we could to help get her out.” The “oversight by the city” has left the woman shaken and angry. She met with the mayor of Pritchard a few days after the ordeal.

If we had more government take care of us we'd be a better country. Or something like that.

Not mowing your lawn should be a Capital offense.

It is still winter, why are people getting all bent out of shape over a lawn? Lawns are supposed to look like crap this time of year.

Pritchard (outside of mobile) has had close to 15 murders this year.

They are a poor town, and like most rundown, poor towns, generate money from bullshite like this.

Nickle and diming the poorer, black residents.
It's a viscous cycle.

it is funny that a day after the DOJ asks courts to stop jailing people over fines, this hits the news

but this is a contempt charge, not a "didn't pay the fine" jailing

It's sad that police don't use discretion when implementing such actions

I should be able to do what I damn well please with my own property. If I want to let the grass grow 10 feet high, that's my prerogative. This is America, dammit. Even Alabama is a nanny state. Time for the revolution, boys. Let's create a libertarian haven.

People need to cut their grass. But she wasn't jailed for the grass. She was jailed for ignoring the citation i.e. skipping court.

This is bullshite.

More evidence that your average cop is a goon on a power trip.

well it is the court/prosecutor who got the warrant and the police don't have the authority to make the call

if they're told to go arrest somebody, they have to. they don't have a full picture of the situation so making that call would be bad

I'd like to think your average civil servant is smart enough to avoid this situation.

Then I remind myself we are talking about government employees, and goverent employees in the middle of BFE. This seems better than par for the course for them. I am surprised they even let her out and didn't even make her pay a fine. Even more surprised they realized a mistake was made, and the woman didn't have to see a judge.

They could certainly make a judgement call and find an alternative to putting her in a cell.

Most likely a city code enforcement officer. I bet the PD there has other pressing matters to concern themselves with.
