Nationwide, there are about 44 million people receiving SNAP benefits at a cost of about $71 billion. The Trump administration has vowed to cut the food stamp rolls over the next decade, including ensuring that able-bodied adults recipients are working.

This should happen in every state. Government assistance should help to get you on your feet, not be a career choice.

I don't think so. The "category" of the revenue (Walmart's) might change. But, the Total Revenue likely will not.

Not entirely true, a lot of people are on welfare because they can receive more benefits from being on it than they would receive from the jobs they can get due to lack of education and/or skills. So while not exactly a 1:1 ratio, people will also be more cognoscente of what they spend their money on when they actually have to "earn" it. If you pay more attention at grocery stores you will see people buying steaks on welfare who would ordinarily not be able to afford it, but I doubt they would buy those steaks if that benefits wasn't handed out to them.

Not if you take the SNAP budget and use it to fund the said jobs. Would be a net gain, without a doubt.

First job out of LSU i worked for the OFS. I was vilified for trying to hold people accountable to receive benefits. I would bust people all the time in their silly simple lies and then they would call and complain. I would get chewed out and have to give them another interview so they could run a different story. People in LA have the system down and just teach their kids how to use it. People that actually need help and dont know how to lie cant get benefits.

That's why I think it should go even farther. I know of some couples that deliberately don't get married so the Mom can receive benefits even though the Dad makes a decent salary.

We're way past that now. Welfare has basically become a generational inheritance. When they tore town the projects after Katrina, people were bitching that they were tearing down homes that have been in their family for generations.

I think you would see more discretionary spending. If someone has $400 in Food Stamps a month they will use $400. If that same person only really needs $350 a month and it's coming from their account, not the taxpayers then they will spend $350. I worked in a grocery store in HS that was adjacent to the 'hood. WIC and Food Stamps were 40-50% of our intake at least. This was over a decade ago and we had some customers who would have $700+ a month for groceries. I have no idea what that number looks like now, but I wouldn't think it has dropped.

I also worked as an HR director for a large employer in that same area fresh out of college. There is a cultural to survive and get by and work the system that is taxing the American welfare system and taking away from those truly in need. The turnover was absolutely crazy because people who work the system know it. They knew how much they could make, how long they had to be employed, and how they had to be let go in order to receive maximum benefits, but still have cash to spend. The thought and dedication they had to achieving this would have made them significantly more money in the long run had they dedicated to their profession.

I applaud Alabama for attempting to correct this. It's tough love, but a system and cycle must be broken. There are those who truly need help and I have zero issue with that being provided. However, the subset of the population that works the system needs to have their priorities shifted for their betterment and societies in the long run. Apply same effort to job that was used to calculating working the system, profit, make more money, pay taxes, instill work ethic in kids, kids do better in school to make more money, kids pay more in taxes, value the work and effort put to obtaining things, crime drops, see the detriment to society that the dregs are and disassociate with them, and society profits. In three generations we could see this blight on the civility in America be eradicated or at least diminished significantly.

This is a movement worth getting behind. Can someone start a Facebook group on this so it can be blasted out to everyone. This is something the governor has to look at. This state is in a budget crisis and it looks like shite all over the place. Get people working!

If I'm not mistaken, all of those counties are in - or near - the blackbelt region. This is an area of rich glacial til that extends from around Tupelo, MS, southward into AL and east to near the GA line. It was the sight of many large plantation operations.

Interestingly enough, the counties in that region tend to vote democrat.

Very interesting...

This is the only thing required to make the inner cities and urban areas hate Trump. All the other stuff is just fluff. Like the fine gentleman here in BR who posted a video awhile back saying that he was going to shoot DT if he took his food stamps away.

Trump is fighting a losing battle with the inner cities/urban areas unfortunately. I do applaud him for trying though.
