AirBnB location in New Orleans- how worried should I be?

Coming in town for the NC game and we are staying at an AirBnB a few blocks northwest of Canal and I-10. I read on another thread here about lots of homeless encamped under I-10? So I assume I should play it save and take the street car as close as I can to my stop as opposed to walking? We are flying into town so don't have to worry about a car getting broken into.

You'll have a great time. Don't be scared of the locals but remember you are in their neighborhood. Try to bring them a peace offering. If you want to look like a local, wear several strands of Mardi Gras beads around your neck whenever you are out and about.
