Africa has very few navigable waterways and natural harbors as well.
It's amazing what havoc the Vikings could dispense with a few ships and some crazy people. But you need the terrain to cooperate.

yeah, the whole whites didn't capture slaves thing is kind of dumb because they couldn't. It was not like they were morally against raiding villages, just that they would get sick and die doing so.
Arabs and Europeans didn't raid villages but they were more than happy to prop up warlords to do it and had a demand for slaves that far exceeded any local demand for slaves.
Created a brutal cycle of wars and depopulation in the area.
Once medicine caught up to the problem, Europeans did raid Africa.

Seeing the guy with all the chains reminds me of a story from when I was 12 or 13, I'm in my 70's now. We were dove hunting in Az over the Labor Day. Back at the motel during the day, we had the national news on. Some where in Alabama they had pulled a black man out of a river with a bunch of chain wrapped around him.
Then the sheriff says " just like one of them coloreds trying to steal more chain than he can carry"."
My best friends dad looked at me and asked me, you know what he was saying.'
