Ignore all the haters here. I’m retiring to Orange Beach in about 12 years. Love it over there.

Any advice on Gulf coast living

Bradenton, Fl, for starters, Gulf Shores/Orange Beach were cool places at one time, a few decades ago, now they are the epitome of red neck, trashiness, and lowest of low rent tourism, but at least they have tons of shitty places to dine at, it's the Carnival Cruise Lines of the gulf coast

I’d rather Perdido Key area or Pensacola. There’s more to do there. GS and Orange Beach are nice but too small.

Lower taxes too

Prayers sent to your kids. I've never known a kid that was homechooled to not be weird or go absolutely bat shite once they get to college. In a few years your kids are going to be 4 year RAs or do a lot of coke.

Have a friend whose grandchildren are homeschooled - 3 of them are already in college, on full schollys and knocking it out of the park.
And then there’s Tim Tebow who’s doing pretty well as a homeschooled...

Moved to Orange Beach with a couple buddies at the beginning of summer in '93 and lived there through the summer of '94. We rented a home that stood on the same piece of property that the Orange Beach Post Office is now sitting on. It was an awesome place to live and we all have some great memories of living there. We had jobs cleaning pools at various condos, hotels, and private homes on Ono Island which allowed us to be off work everyday by noon so we had plenty of time to hit the beach before heading to the Flora-Bama each night! Orange Beach and Gulf Shores has grown so much bigger since then. It's so commercialized now it saddens me when I think about how amazing and laid back it was in the early '90s.

+1 on that. It went to shite after the Lambert's/Phoenix X crowd took over. Flora-Bama is shite now too.

Tebow seems very weird and socially awkward to me. Nice guy though

It looked like this when I was a kid. The go-cart track and kiddy rides were located at the main intersection across from the public beach.

Flora Bama in the early '90s was pretty much a dive bar on the beach. Used to have to walk through the little package liquor store to get into the bar. It was a rowdy crowd and a very cool atmosphere. Lots of locals, bikers, and hard drinkers but it was always a good time. I also loved hanging out a Papa Rocco's in Gulf Shores. They had live music, cold beer, and their Hot Shucks Oysters were Delicious!

It's changed a lil bit since then.

People complain about traffic now but I remember when that 2 lane road from 10 was bumper to bumper and you got stuck behind somebody pulling a camper!

I remember the go cart track and the rides, they also had a putt putt golf place back then. There was a restaurant back then across from the track called Coconut Willie's. Back then The Hangout was nothing more than some pool tables and cigarette machine. My parents owned a condo at The Plantation on Fort Morgan Road back in the '80s and we'd go into Gulf Shores to eat and hang out a lot of nights. It was a great place to be a teenager at in the summer.

Fairhope area is great and a few people I know who live in foley area love it. One guy has a small house close to the kids schools and a beach house that they live in on weekends.

I’m not going through the 4 pages nor do I know your budget. But based on the school location I’d be looking at something in Bon Secour or Magnolia Springs. Maybe even Josephine on the bay if you can swing it.

It is gone and sadly will never be the same. I remember the old gulf shores motel at the T, the Keg when it was 24/7 and on and on. Before the pink t-shirt wearing, salt life decal crowd and hordes of Texans completely took over.

I'm going to throw my bias towards Fairhope once again as I went from pre-school to graduating from Fairhope High.

It's one of, if not the best public schools in Baldwin County. I'd rate a "new" Spanish Fort high school up there too. The OP has his mind set on a private school in Gulf Shores for his child. He will hate his life living in Gulf Shores because of traffic and tourism from March-September. Just my humble opinion

or Magnolia Springs
We have a house (river side) on the Magnolia River very close to the cold hole, which few if any on this board will know where that is or the significance. The lot itself is worth stupid money

Magnolia Springs is better than anything Foley has to offer and much quieter
