Currently live in North AL but don’t like it and have always loved the Alabama coast. My job allows me to move anywhere in Alabama. Has anyone here lived in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach? I know the scene as a tourist but know very little about the residential side.

Info: family of 4. Two boys who are 1st and 6th grades. We homeschool and are considering a private school in Gulf Shores as an option for high school and is the primary reason we won’t move to the Eastern Shore. Wife REALLY likes this particular school so that’s the reason for only considering the GS/OB area.

Any advice on Gulf coast living? Really want a family friendly neighborhood absent of snooty people if possible. Wife and I are pretty sick of the “keeping up with the Joneses” crowd.

What's the private school in GS? I might be biased but Fairhope has some pretty good schools and isn't that far from Gulf Shores

Living by the coast puts you near even more money, and keeping up with the Joneses.

South Baldwin Christian Academy. As I mentioned, kids currently homeschool for a variety of reasons so we’re pretty particular about where they could go to a brick and mortar school, especially the older one. Essentially the school decision has been made and we don’t want to commute from Fairhope every day.

Prayers sent to your kids. I've never known a kid that was homechooled to not be weird or go absolutely bat shite once they get to college. In a few years your kids are going to be 4 year RAs or do a lot of coke.

I semi-grew up there, but it's not the same sleepy little town with a snowbird problem as in the 80s and 90s.

I’d rather Perdido Key area or Pensacola. There’s more to do there. GS and Orange Beach are nice but too small.

Befriend someone with a fishing boat. Buy flood insurance.

I’ve got my eye on gulf breeze or Perdido one of these days. Seems very nice and not in the middle of the touristy areas, but close enough

Plus I’d never be able to live in the state of Alabama and pay taxes into their system. Gotta be on the Florida side of the border

Friend of mine teaches there. Orange Beach living is expensive, they are looking to move away from the coast where you can get more land and privacy for your money.

I know someone who lives on the bay side across from Orange Beach and loves it. It's not Ono Island, but that land kind of behind it.
He loves being somewhat isolated over there most of the time, but when he wants to do the beach, fish, or take some family to do touristy stuff, it's all right nearby.
