I think if I could live anywhere in Alabama it would be Florence. I love that area personally. Just thought I would mention it in case you are not familiar with it. Perfect size for me and you have plenty of opportunities to hunt/fish if that is something you enjoy.

What made your wife so determined on a particular school?

Great place to live.
Like others said - Look at Fairhope (they have Bayside Academy - blows the doors off SBCA. The campus SBCA used to be Bayside)
I would also look into Central Christian or Snook Christian Academy - that would allow you to look at Foley, Robertsdale, Silverhill, Daphne, etc)

A lot of things. Our older son is complicated. She thinks this school would fit him best. Younger one is easy so can go anywhere the older one goes.

I've never known a kid that was homechooled to not be weird or go absolutely bat shite once they get to college.
I've known several normal, well adjusted home schoolers. Of course those had fairly normal, well educated, well adjusted parents.
The one's I've know that ended up like you're describing were typically the ones who were home schooled because they were weird and /or bat shite in a public school first so their parents tried to home school that out of them
Of course I'm old, this is an observation of friends and acquaintances kids. Sometimes the crazies are good at masking for the adults.

’ve got my eye on gulf breeze or Perdido one of these days. Seems very nice and not in the middle of the touristy areas, but close enough
I've been longing to retire/move to the Forgotten Coast area of Florida. St George Island, specifically, but the Apalachicola area as a general area.

Ok, but what makes her think it is “the place”? A website? Facebook reviews? Personal tour of school and meeting with principal?

I lived there for a year and a half then a couple of months twice over the past few years.
I think it is a great area. Summers are busy. From Labor Day to Spring break, it is a very quiet slow place. There are tons and tons of subdivisions from GS/OB to Foley to chose from. Mostly Adams homes that start in the mid 200k range.
There is not much of an economy there outside of the summer tourist season. Everything revolves around it and so do any jobs. Orange Beach has a nice little rec center on Canal road to the east.
Really that is about all I can think of to say about it unless you have specific questions. When I was there, I rented a condo on west beach in Gulf shores, a Phoenix unit on the beach, and a condo across from the beach. Liked all three.

Yes. She has done a lot of research including personal tours (twice) and conversations with people, including my dad who retired to the area a couple of years ago after a long career as an administrator at an elite private school. While there are a lot of great schools in the area, this one seems to be the best fit for our hard-to-fit kid. And although homeschooling has been a great option for him so far, we both think it would be great for him to have a high school experience.

You won’t need private schools if you live in Fairhope.
