I would imagine the same way you would deal with anything else. Eat healthy, drink lots of water, limit drugs and alcohol, workout every morning, get plenty of sleep, spend time with people you care about, read instead of watching TV etc..

What are the highly scientific procedures that go into an ADD/ADHD diagnosis doc?

Easy. I learn a lot about a lot.

I didn’t read any of the responses. But for me, it is a strength, not a weakness.
I would suggest learning to be super organized and clean to the point of being OCD about it, and developing a system to maintain it that works for you, and is not complicated. It’s not easy at first, and you will need a little help from people close to you, but it is worth it, and can be liberating to know exactly where everything is supposed to be, and to have it be there.
In terms of career, find a job that you love that aligns with whatever you are passionate about. People with ADD have an ability to hyper-focus in certain areas/fields that pique their interest. Make it an advantage, because it certainly is when channeled correctly.

Do you believe clinical depression is real, how about Schizophrenia, or Parkinson's disease? These and dozens of other disorders cannot be diagnosed by some definitive test. Physical exams, and imagining studies are used to eliminate other neurological problems, but then it is mostly diagnosed by observing, and questioning the patient, the same as ADHD.

Yes awesome advice. I realized one career path was not going to work and changed it. I know everyone doesn’t have that option, but clearly some are better fits than others.
And also great advice on organization and habitual methods. I struggle with this but it’s good to hear someone’s experience of figuring things out.
I also think a good sleep schedule is really important. Get a little tired and all concentration goes out the door. I guess it fits into creating routines.
And I keep laughing at the baws who are suddenly experts is psychology. Who are you mad at?

Read the books mindfulness and the power of now.
Learn how to focus on the present. Learn how to talk to yourself (inner voice) to put yourself back on the right track.
Understand that you are a space cadet. Your mind will wonder. Big deal, just realize when it is happening and re-focus.
Good advice.
quote:I agree if this is an option, but everyone’s situation is different. But as far as the drug tests, not true. You can get marked for taking amphetamines and they will likely check your medical records and see that you are prescribed and move along without any questions. They could also ask you and then it’s just verified by a pharmacy. And amphetamines and methamphetamines are two different drugs (and there’s different isomers of each that cause different actions in the brain). If a lab needs to tell if you are taking vyvanse or smoking crystal, they can tell that too. So you are not marked as a methhead if you are prescribed adhd meds.
Stay off the drugs. There is no way that taking speed every single day of your life is healthy.
Taking vyvance will LITERALLY cause you to fail a drug test the same as if you were on crystal meth.

I have a terrible time focusing. My mind is constantly racing from one thing to another. I finally broke down and tried meds, but none of them seemed to work.

An adult with ADHD should be taken about as seriously as an adult who chooses to go by the name “Timmy”. It’s like, come on now. It’s time to put this silliness behind you
Then why did my psychiatrist diagnose me with it at age 33 and the meds completely changed my life? I take addy before bed and sleep better than I ever have. Can you explain that away as "silliness" when normal people take it to stay up all night?

3 steps to dealing with it
1. Nod occasionally when someone is talking to you. Most of the time you won’t be quizzed on what they were saying, unless you are married to the person talking to you,
2. Make lists of things that you need to do and do them one at a time. Keep the list in your front left pocket.
3. Surround yourself with remembery people. If you forget what you were doing or why you are somewhere, they may know the answer.

Medicine: I avoid the prescription medication - to each their own. I have had some benefit from acetyl-l-carnitine; in my experience it gives me an improved ability to focus that feels clean, unlike my experience with prescription meds. I also use L-Theanine combined with whatever caffeine source I’m consuming, and that helps tremendously with focus.
What dosages?

Just like with my son, I tried pretty much everything for 2 years to get it under control. Ended up trying the meds, and it's worked wonders. The only drawback is that the med I am on, I need the 50mg, but it makes me grouchy as frick so instead of being a dick to my kids and wife, I take the 40mg and it evens out.
