You'll be moving back in with them within a month.

He's not a child. He is an adult with prior commitments. It would be nice of him to acquiesce to his mother, but he has no obligation to do so.

IF your friend isn't just bailing (he probably is), maybe his mom isn't "making" him, maybe she really wants him to be here. There's stuff my mom thinks is a huge deal that I couldn't care less about, but I'll go to those things just because I realize that. Now, if it's a huge inconvenience I'll tell her that, but I'll try to make it. It's just the right thing to do.
You just sound selfish.

Your friend just decided he didn't want to go somewhere with you, get over it.

Some friends and I had a trip planned for months and one guy bailed at the last minute because his mom is "making" him attend a funeral for a friend of his parents that he doesn't even know but she wants him there.
That actually sounds like an excuse for him not to go on the trip. Maybe it's not his parents... maybe it's you.

How old are you and your friend?
I'm 32. The people I've known to do this are/were in their mid to late 20s when I was taken aback by it.

I love my parents and love to help them.
They don't ask me to do stuff much though.
They know I am an adult with a family of my own.

So what? He was on the hook for booking and paying for certain things and pulls this last minute. That's just a bitch move.

What part of "friends and I" don't you understand? He's screwing over everyone.

My wife has a friend that is engaged to get married in July. She and her fiance are moving to Atlanta afterwards, but they may have to move before the wedding if his new job requires it. I couldn't believe it when my wife said they may go to justice of the peace before the wedding ceremony to get married because the bride's mom wouldn't want her daughter to live with her boyfriend before they are married. This is a 29 year old woman. Maybe it makes no difference to the bride, but I just thought it was all ridiculous.

Family is more important. If that extra percentage of your expenses effects the affordability of this trip for you, you don't need to be going anyway. If this were my friend I would completely understand why they couldn't come.

Yet, you are the only one bitching about it on the internet and maybe your friends are selfish too, I don't know.

Didn't sound like she was asking. At least I don't think that's what "make" means.

You're basing that off Op's description, which is likely leaving stuff out.

I have seen many adults make kids do sports, year-round, non stop every day, take private lessons and live vicariously through them. Some even, yell, scream, belittle the children the entire time to make sure they are better than the nearest competitor. Only problem is another set of parents come along with more money, even harsher methods on the kids, suck up even more to the coaches, and they beat that said child. The parents pit one kid against another and hate one another, but fake like they are friends with other parents.
It's sort of comical to watch, but yet so sad to see these kids waste their childhoods doing one thing over and over again, when it is so obvious they would just like to be kids and have fun doing all the things kids do.

Yep. That's how I feel about my adult kids as well. They have their lives, I'm staying out of it and never pressuring them for anything

I have had this discussion with many people. If you have Boomer parents They have a severe disability to not be in control of your life. I have seen it from my parents and others. They feel because they are you parents that they can still try to boss you around and control your decisions. And if you dont tell/show then that you are an adult and not under their supervision anymore, you will be miserable around your parents.
