Thankfully our government overlords have deemed this illegal to manufacture new so it will be at best super expensive to get some and can’t get any for a few days. The other option is replace the entire unit. Currently we have a carrier that’s 50 years old, made in the USA, and hasn’t given us any trouble in literally years.

Man they just don’t make things like they used to. Anyway, regulations making things more expensive and difficult on regular people can SMB.

Unless you're going to find and fix the leak, you're going to keep needing it.

Well they've replaced the newer freon than r22 also so I would say you did well. Goes into effect in January.

It's been leaking for some period of time. Just adding refrigerant won't solve that.

i'd hire korkstand for the install then hire a professional to do the rest.

AC guy seemed to take care of that. I will confirm when he comes back tomorrow.

I feel like Hank Hill when his TV broke and was forced to buy one made in Japan.

Why? Carrier, Trane, Goodman, American standard, and a couple more are all still made in the us.

Your AC was manufactured before Nixon was impeached. I'd say it served you well. Sadly, you'll be lucky to get 15 years out of a new one.

Not gonna lie I’m shocked to hear that. Unless it’s the bullshite “assembled in the USA with global materials”

$1600-$1800 is what it cost's an EPA certified tech to purchase a 30 lb jug of recycled R-22. Roughly $55 a pound. They'll likely charge you $200-$300 a pound to charge your unit.

You can always take out a loan for it....

I just had to have my R 410A filled because it has a small leak, it was $60#. Needed 4.5#'s...

Seriously... Time to upgrade..

R-12....gone
R-22.....gone
R-410A......phasing out
R-454B/R-32.....coming 2025......(and these have a 2L flammability rating)

since the new, replacement gases have a 2L flammability rating, you cannot retro older units to receive the new refrigerant since the UL rating on the equipment was tested for a 2L gas.

and the best part is the new refrigerants are not as efficient as R-22......

All the new shite never is...

My old house had termites back in the 60's... They treated it with Chlordane, shite will last 100 years... It's a shame they don't make it anymore in the US... You can get all of it you want in Mexico including R22.
