Filter clean, had motor changed this weekend, Freon good, coils clean. I turn it off and let it defrost then turn it back on and it runs the rest of the day. Any suggestions? AC repair man seems stumped…

I would have him check the inside coil for blockage and check freon levels again for possible leak.

How cool are you trying to keep your space vs how hot it is outside? I'm no HVAC tech, but you may be asking too much of your unit.

Some possibilities.
1. Measure superheat/subcooling — not just “check Freon.”
2. Verify blower speed is correct and air volume matches coil design.
3. Check coil temp sensor/thermistor — replace if questionable.
4. Inspect all ductwork for kinks or collapsed areas.
5. Check for stuck relays or contactors keeping unit on too long.
6. Confirm condensate drainage is unobstructed.
7. Clean the coils in the air handler in the attic.

Also possible is the TXV (thermal expansion valve) or capillary tube is malfunctioning — if refrigerant isn’t expanding properly, it can cause freezing.

If your coil is more than 15 years old, get a new one, especially if you live on the Gulf Coast or every 2 weeks or so this will keep happening....because you have a leak on the coil. It sucks but it will cost a lot less than having your A/C guy come out constantly to recharge your coolant

That used to happen to our unit in our apartment in college when it had to run too hard to keep up. Granted the unit was a piece of crap but maybe you are tying to keep it to cold?

id bet money you have a tiny leak in the coil. They are hell to find if in a hard to find area. I have a great AC guy and it took three trips to find my leak.

Agree, had the same issue and it was a small coil leak.

It was an old unit and a new coil was very expensive. Had him put some leak/sealer in the system which got me another couple years and then I went ahead and replaced when I had the money.

It would seem there is a restriction in the coils or the expansion valve. At some point, did you get 'used, dirty' freon to charge the system? I trust the fan on the condenser is in good shape.

Icing usually means low freon in my experience.

Could be many things but the usual culprits will be low refrigerant charge or an airflow issue. Difficult to say without being there. Both coils are clean (evaporator and condenser)? When did the issue start? Before or after the motor replacement?

Where is it freezing, your ac guy seems not so good. To properly check "freon" he needs to check Subcool and Superheat. First things first though. Check airflow, dirty or clogged coil, dirty filter, bad blower motor will all cause freezing, then you have restrictions. Could be the filter drier, expansion valve or a kinked line set. And finally a leak.

If the outside unit isn't shutting off, bad contact switch. Like a $10 part.

No..... No it isnt. its low because thats what happens when there is low pressure in the condensate line. It ices.
