As Director of Cone Integrity for TD I’d have to disagree. I have some level of decision making ability in hurricane threads but outside of that it’s like I don’t even exist.

99% of the time this phrase is used when people agree with the persons complaint but have no power to change anything. It means "I agree but I can't do anything about it". It has nothing to do with being a follower.
exactly. I don’t like the saying but sometimes you are outta words and the other party needs to understand that you have done all you can. I worked for a company that basically let us sales guys do anything we needed or wanted. After a decade we were bought by a huge multinational company and the clipped our wings. So much became out of my control I just quit. The customers had grown used to us fixing everything that they just never understood

What an utterly ridiculous statement.

It is entirely possible that one can be held accountable for corporate financial shenanigans and not have a bit of ownership....

I work on our executive level and a lot of time politics are involved. It's a good answer when someone asks me a question that is confidential/or they're just being messy. Nicer than, "that's none of your fricking business."

Some things are "above" your pay grade. If you meddle in that stuff, you might be afforded the avenue to pursue other opportunities.

This.

I work in commercial banking. Some things are above my pay grade because they legally have to be. And to be honest, there’s plenty of stuff I don’t want to know because information can be a burden just as easily as it can be an asset.

I’ve never understood people who don’t grasp the concept that they can’t have a say in every decision that gets made at an organization. It’s not a democracy, it’s a for-profit enterprise.

Total opposite. You are either the loser who gets used or you’re taking advantage of and mismanaging people. Modern slave labor much?!

I guess owning a share or two of stock doesn't count. I'm thinking of a level of ownership where you don't need scientific notation to calculate the size of your piece of the pie, and you stand to make a lot of money if the company is sold- the old "golden parachute."

This is not even close to true, but I work in healthcare. You think directors in hospital get anything if a hospital is sold?

When Sailors ask me why we can't grow out beards in the Navy I correctly say that it's above my pay grade because it is. We can bitch, moan, send e-mails, bring up our dissatisfaction with the policy at town halls, and a bunch of other methods that have been tried and tested, but at the end of the day it is the decision of someone who far outranks me as to whether or not we can have beards.

I’ll give an inside out response to this. Knowing where your influence/ authority ends is actually really important. Issue should get leveled up if it needs worked and is stuck. A good manager will then empower the employee to be empowered to work the task with correct management support.

It is process improvement 101 to improve business processes and get employee stakeholder buy in by letting them own the change.

This also from a corporate POV. I work for a publically traded company Fortune 500 company.

Another fun fact: The more titles, certifications, and recommendations on your linkedin, the less likely you are to actually have any meaningful authority.
