Weren't there just as many US Army Soldiers in that same battle?

boxcarbarney
Just so you know, with the details from his citation his name can still be found (for your own privacy and that of your wife).

there's a quote from an Iwo vet Marine, something like this "the navy was good to us on the way to battle, good food and board, gave us good artillery support, the flyboys were awesome with their air to ground support, the army? sometimes we wondered if they were even on our side

If interested at all, go read On Desperate Ground by Hampton Sides. I devoured that book in 2 nights.
Macarthur in korea was like les miles on 1-12-12 and i hate sports to war analogies

One thing I remember: He said they stabbed him with sharpened bamboo in sensitive areas like the arm pits.

I'm sure that the US Army Soldiers who were mangled, wounded, maimed, disabled and killed fighting the Japanese would get a hearty, good-natured laugh out of this wonderful comedic remark!

I have relatives in that group

it's a quote from a Marine that fought on Iwo, from "Flags of Our Fathers" if you've ever been in the military, or just around military folks a lot, then you've noticed that gallows humor is the norm, but it's quite possible that was his perception, the quote was made while Bradley was conducting interviews for the book, decades after the war

Never heard my grandad talk much about it, so not sure if he ever saw hard combat in the army but he did tell me about climbing onto tanks to try to get warm from the frigid temps in Korea

Inchon was great I guess. But it was a gamble that could've gone terribly wrong considering the state of our amphibious forces and overall readiness. If that shore was adequately defended that could've been a disaster. Still, I take risks like that in war games and you feel brilliant because of the reward vs the risk.
But all the other risks taken alongside his arrogance and aloofness combined with allowing a sycophant idiot like Almond to run wild are an solid indictment of MacArthur post WWII.
On a positive note, how terrific a leader is Oliver Smith? That dude saved thousands of Marines and Soldiers. But I know he'd credit the engineers and fighting men that served under him. And they deserve credit. They all made the best chicken salad ever out of frozen chicken shite.

Thanks God we had scant few soy boys back then. My great uncle was a skull cracker! He fought in WWII and Korea. In Korea he went behind enemy lines to save a friend taking fire as well. In the process he was injured. Got the Purple Heart and Silver Star...pure bad arse!

The USMC today teaches that words wound just as much as bullets and his bullying remarks would not be welcome in today's US military. He probably hates Transexual Marines, too.
