So, How did this guy travel with the band if he wasn't on the roster? No ticket, no room assignment?

Even the Aggies that don't actually blow just fake it

To be fair to him. It's impressive that he put in the time to learn tht marches at the least. Obviously the Aggies do the same shite every performance but it's still difficult precision marching that he'd have to learn.

Could he not learn to play his instrument in 4 years?

That’s one way to put it I guess.

I've known guys who didn't really play any instruments, but just wanted to be in the band. Basically, the director needs more bodies for the marching formations and parades than the actual number of musicians needed. So they let some slide thru.
The "accidental" part seems exaggerated, though. Lots of guys punch out of the corps during Freshman Orientation Week, or after their first year. To go through a minimum of 2 years of ROTC (for non-contracts) and 4 full years of ridiculous Corps of Cadets life, the guy obviously made the decision that he wanted to do it and stay.

lol I know him. I was one of his fish when he was a senior and he actually told me this story once when I went to pull his boots. Great guy; really funny and very kind.
God damn A&M is so damn gay

All those aggies are good at playing the skin flute.

I sent this to an Aggie friend of mine.

Yep. It’s pretty wild. He was totally ignorant. When I was in the Corps in the 90’s, they were trying to recruit and increase numbers and retention. So, it was not uncommon for band members to not play an instrument just march. I had a trombone player friend in the band that never played a note. He just wanted to drill.
