While America’s economy has grown for over a decade, that growth is increasingly concentrated in 1% of the nation’s counties.

Just 31 counties, or the top 1% by share, made up 32.3% of U.S. gross domestic product in 2018, according to data released last week by the Bureau of Economic Analysis that included nearly 20 years of county-level GDP data. That's despite these counties only having 26.1% of employed Americans and 21.9% of the population last year. Their combined GDP share is also up from a recession low of 30.1% in 2009.

The nation’s economy is becoming increasingly concentrated in large cities and by the coasts—and less so in rural counties—spurring the question of whether rural areas will be increasingly left behind.

Why? I'm not....there is still a lot of manufacturing and industrial output in those two cities not to mention generations of wealth generated.

Can't says as to actually why, but it makes sense based on everything else I've seen on the "boom" of some of these cities.

Don't know much about KC, but the explosion of growth in Nashville is grossly overblown. They are playing catch-up in a lot of ways, finally building more hotels and doing as much infrastructure patching as possible. BNA is not fit for Birmingham, Alabama much less Nashville. Most of the growth in the city has also been with those in their 20s. While potentially great for the future if they stick around, there is still a deficit of high-paying job opportunities when you compare the city to other mid-majors like Charlotte and Tampa, and they're not even in the same stratosphere of the Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, Philly, Boston grouping.

It'll be interesting to see how much Denver and Nashville grow, as the biggest catalsyt for their growth has been quite plainly, they are great quality-of-life cities, with comparably low costs of living to major hubs in their regions.

This becomes a much more interesting study if it is indexed to population to give productivity per capita.

Seeing these numbers I don’t know why this surprises anyone. I would say that with that % of population and employed peoples, that % gdp is tight in line.
