Earlier today I mentioned to someone that when I attended Catholic school in middle school (early 90s) that in science class evolution was taught (or covered. It was in the science book so it was just part of the course).

This person didn't believe that they taught evolution at Catholic schools. This isn't about what religion is better or whether or not religion is not good for society. It isn't about debating evolution. If you went to Catholic school, were you taught about evolution?

Yep.
And we didn't think anything of it actually being taught.

I went to Lutheran school then Catholic school and I pretty much knew evolution was a fact the entire time. Hard to deny the tadpole transition to a frog. We learned about charles Darwin in about 3rd grade probably or maybe I just watched alot of animal planet.

Change your avi back. Now

And to answer your OP, I went to Catholic school through 1979 (St Anthony's and Redemptorist). It was not taught in elementary, junior high or high school.

ETA: I will cede that I do not remember it being taught in any form or fashion. Cannot state categorically it was not taught.

I began 1st grade at Our Lady of Angels in 1957 and received my BA from Iona College in 1973 - 16 years of Catholic elementary school, high school, and college.

By the 4th or 5th grade the nuns were teaching evolution. While in religion class we were taught of a Creator (part of the faith) evolution was taught as part of the science curriculum.

I do not believe that the Catholic Church has denied evolution. I think it was our Fundamentalist brethren.

Edited: because I am ignorant of other denominations.

For some reason I think there is something to this. I remember a friend telling me their priest taught their science class. When asked about evolution and the old testament of the bible, he basically said he acknowledged the old testament as parables. Stories used to teach or get a message across and that he believed in evolution.

That person is just ignorant. Evolution is taught in all Catholic schools. Evolution is considered compatible with the faith by Catholicism, as an official position. It is certain protestant sects that do the whole creationism thing.
