Yes.
Throughout the 70s.
Catholics do not constrain the how of God's creation. Science is the study of creation and how God makes it work. God gave us our intellect to know him.

This. We even had a Christian Brother who would have "stump the Catholic" types of sessions where we could pepper him with questions. Lots of us smart-arse kids asking, "Yeah, but the Bible says" questions and he'd bring it all back to reality.

Yes it was taught in catholic schools. It was also taught that evolution does not disprove the existence of God.
