Curious what percentage of boomers have little to no savings but also own a paid off house worth 500k plus..

Damn, I'm doing much better than I thought.

It's fairly f'ing simple - all I've done is auto deposited $40-50 per paycheck for the past 35 years. Company matched up to 5% of my contributions.

I've done this with a less than $100k salary. How do so many people screw this up?

While this is a good first step, I think it is worth mentioning that people "should" be doing much more than this.

i mean those are pathetic numbers but you realize median salary in LA is $53,477k and median household is 60,756

for the US its $64,220 & $83,730

thats for full time, for all workers its $51,370

median take home in LA is ~43,200

you bring up that million dollars range.....but why would the median person need over 20 years of savings when the median retirement age is 62 in louisiana and median age of death is not even 74 and that doesnt include SS

thing is not everyone is you or me. many have always been poor and plan to retire poor and plan to live mainly off SS and other benefits. you need to take that into account

and the fact you think any politician is going to let SS go belly up is laughable. they will print enough money to put us in the poor house should that even be remotely a possibility.

i agree all of that is pathetic but you need to take your upper middle class blinders off.

If I knew what mean, median and average meant, I could understand this better

Mean and average usually mean the same thing. However, some folks do mean "median" when they say "average".

Median is "the middle" - meaning the point where there are as many above as below (for purposes of this topic).

Mean is just that - the weighted "average".

Two examples:

11 people, total retirement savings $1.1m. That means the average is $100k. That tells you something, but not much.

If the break down is:

$0, $0, $250, $750, $3k, $5k, $16k, $75k, $200k, $300k, $500k

Then the median is $5k.

With the entire population of a relatively wealthy nation (the U.S. is certainly that), "median" is usually going to give you a better picture of what is typical than the mathematical "mean" or average.

You a champion of the common man, brah?

What you are telling me I suppose, based on the stats, is that we are a nation of poors. And that I'm truly in the 5%, if not maybe the 3%.

And that makes me fear for civilization, because I don't have much left over at the end of the month.

started with a new company last year.

They put in 10% into my 401k no matter if I put anything in or not and then will match 100% up to another 8%.

I'm riding this as long as they keep doing it.

I honestly didn't know companies were still doing this much anymore.

I work for a small company, but they give you 5% and match 3%. It's better than I had working for a large corporation. People who don't at least get their company match are just money morons.
