Pretty obvious question i guess- but would this pill theoretically help those of us who are just plain old insomniacs, without apnea ? Why or why not ?
It appears from the article that the medicine does not put the brain to sleep, it merely allows the brain to do what it does naturally, which is sleep. The efficacy comes from the medicine's ability to wake up the brain stem while not waking up the brain.

Waking up the brain stem prevents full muscle relaxation in the throat. The full muscle relaxation is what cuts off airflow. The airflow cutoff causes interruptions in sleep, snoring, gasping, and other more serious health problems.

Lots of $$$$ about to be thrown at politicians.

Not to help patients mind you but to protect the companies making breathing machines.

The biggest company in the segment, Dutch giant Philips, is exiting the market. Resmed is the only real giant in the space, and they are a $37B company. That puts them up against Big Pharma, who will be all out to sell this pill if it works as advertised. Resmed will lose that one. Insurance would rather pay for the pill too,

Back in my wilder days, I was prescribed Ambien.

I took 3, woke up the next day and found that I had taken the whole bottle of 30. Slept walk to my truck and didn't remember it.

so right now, I'm trying to mouthpiece route with my dentist

Chose this option about 4-5 years ago and have been happy with it. Just recently I had to send my "appliance" back to the manufacturer to have the liner replaced and I can definitely tell the difference sleeping without it.

Not sure how much I trust a pill that alters the brain like that.
This! Remember when Ambien was the fad for people with trouble sleeping? Pretty sure the creators of "The Walking Dead" had a spouse on that shite and that's how they got the idea for the show.

GLP-1 are the end of CPAP .
I have a friend that is a sleep medicine physician. She is adding weight management to her practice to get ahead of the downturn.

Your neck measurement is a key indicator.

21in

Zero sleep events per hour.

My problem... I just don't sleep. If I stay up 24 hours and set an alarm three hours later. I'll still wake up 5 minutes before the alarm sets off.

Miserable really.

I work in sleep medicine. Weight is only one factor. Age and the structure of the throat are the others, and that's just for obstructive apnea. Central sleep apnea is a a whole other ball game.

I'd get a CPAP and use the piece when travelling for work and pleasure. A pill, if safe, could be a HUGE game-changer

A chemical cure would be nice. Not a fan of the implant. I’m so used to the CPAP can’t sleep without it, but it’d be great to get rid of it.

I have no idea what type I have but at the urging of my daughter who was in nursing school at the time I did a sleep study (at home variety). Results showed I stopped breathing 67x an hour. Got on cpap and went to <5x over night and <2x within a couple of days and has stayed there. Can’t sleep without my cpap. Don’t understand how a pill can accomplish same thing?

I don’t use CPAP. I mean, who doesn’t want to die in their sleep?
