When I was 6, we lived in Robertsdale, AL, on a street perpendicular to a cattle auction place. The piss and poo from the cows were drained out into some woods that separated the auction house from the area where the neighborhood was. It created little islands of ground & trees where we’d go play bb gun wars. Sounds disgusting; different times I guess.
Anyway, some older kids were chasing us during a war. My friends ran around a set of bushes and hid. I didn’t see them hide and instead kept running straight...into the piss/manure lake. I sank into it semi-quickly screaming my head off. I managed to grab a branch from one of the trees growing sideways and pulled myself up. I remember it made a sucking sound like unclogging a super-backed up drain. One of my friends grabbed me and pulled me the rest of the way out.
Once out, the kids did the appropriate thing and laughed at me covered in cow shite. But yeah, I almost died in a sea of piss and patties.

Lots of farms have pits like these but newer ones can be built under the barn itself under grating.
It seems the best design would be one that is shallow enough that you wouldn’t drown if standing in it.
I’m sure they just drowned in the murky mixture as you can’t swim in it. Like another poster above said the two rescuers likely became the other fatalities when they went in to help the other guy. It happens like that in confined space fatalities often.
