re: A farewell to Kirby Smith Hall

Fall 04, 14th floor. Paid a fine to terminate my lease and move into an apartment for the spring. Sad to see my first LSU residence go, but man was that place a dump at the time. Weekly fire alarms at 3 a.m., piss filled elevators, the douche at the end of the hall who thought it was okay to converse with his friends at the other end of the hall by yelling with doors open at all hours of the night..... I lived in a frat house after and it was more civilized.

I was there in 03. Hated it, but it was close to the nice cafeteria.

With all this nicer student housing, the last bit of tigerland that wasn’t ghetto is basically going to die.

Understandable.

This is a prime example of LSU wasting money. Why would they redo half the building 7 years ago just to tear it down?

Aside from the parties, piss, and vomit, my favorite memory would have to be flooding the 9th floor while in a prank war with the 8th floor. I lived on 10, but was too drunk to realize I only went down one flight of stairs.

Weird how they’ve gone from bigger dorm rooms in 3-5 story buildings that matched the rest of campus (Highland) to smaller rooms in Soviet looking buildings with no design features (McVoy, Kirby, Herget) to campus apartments like ECA or WCA, now back to the bigger rooms in nicer buildings that match the rest of campus (Spruce, all of Nicholson Gateway).

I think they got the format right with Nicholson Gateway and the newer residential buildings as well as the older early 20th century dorms like Johnson (which is now an office building).

The 1960s - 1970s crap like Kirby Smith, Herget, Miller, and McVoy were all mistakes.
