FYI

When animals get sick they don't eat. In other words, they fast.

When a person fast, the body's natural healing abilities kicks in. After about 3 days, the brain starts burning ketones instead of glucose as an energy source. So she/he may get better by not eating.

I would only get worried if it goes past 2 weeks. If the person is skinny, then anything over a week is pushing it.

Make sure she gets electrolytes. Better to use the sugar free gatorade or powerade. The body won't get into ketosis (healing mode) while drinking sugar.

I would sit then down and try to talk with them. They are probably going through a lot of stuff and just need someone to listen.

That you know of. Many people have addictions and are very functional in day to day life. It sounds like they may be grappling with one and it’s either escalating so they’re reaching out for help or they’ve hit rock bottom (maybe financially) and/or are going through withdrawals.

All I’m saying is definitely don’t rule it out.

I'm not saying anything you've posted in this thread is incorrect, but I feel like you're only a post or two away from suggesting essential oils.

Bring them to the ER. They’ll get PECd. A behavior health facility will take care of them for a week or two so they can get treatment.

Depression is serious. This world right now is dealing with depressing issues. I have admitted myself to two psychtritic hospitals when I was much younger. Your friend needs to be stabilized. Call for help tonight. This is serious shite !

You can call the police for a request for protective custody. They will be brought to a hospital and potentially kept there for psychiatric evaluation if necessary.

Never call the cops for shite like this. They are not mental health professionals. What do you want them to do? A while ago someone called the cops for this and ended up getting their family member shot.

agreed, never call the cops when a family member is having a mental issue, many other resources available.

Granted I would need more info than the OP provides to be sure, but no inpatient facility is going to admit a patient with no history of suicide attempts, substance abuse, or in this case an eating disorder just for depression. A lot of people are depressed and it can easily be handled with medication as long as there isn’t a more serious diagnoses which will require an intake from a psychiatrist.

The police will take that report over the phone. They aren’t coming out until there’s a body on the ground.

I have no idea to be honest. They are successful, currently employ not in any danger, have pretty much frick you money. Not on drugs but a smoker. Pretty much on paper there is nothing to be unhappy or depress about. Yet this shite is happening and the thing is, I don't live with said family member, they are in a different city but they felt the need to tell me they have yet to eaten and have been starving themselves.

Like I see that as a cry for help but I have no fricking idea what to do.

Agree with all of the above.

Just observe and make sure she is drinking a lot of water and, preferably, getting some salts in the fluids. She is technically fasting.

Starvation is when food is withheld from you beyond your control. Fasting is when you elect not to consume food. Just about every nation/culture fasts regularly except for the West.

I have often fasted for 48-72 hours and several times went to 4 days. I once did a 5-day but then it gets dicey. (There’s no fasting during quarantines.LOL)

Once in deep ketosis it actually gets easier and you start to feel really good after 72 hours. Kind of a detox high. So she probably feels just fine internally, physically speaking.

After 4 days of true fasting, hunger virtually disappears. One of the reasons why people in concentration camps didn’t go completely insane. A problem with hunger is when you keep getting intermittent morsels of food that trigger hunger response.

When she chooses to start eating again, make sure she doesn’t pig out. That can cause even worse problems.

Does the following apply to alcoholics.

Call the coroner and get a CEC/OPC for depression and failure to thrive.

ETA it sounds weird but yes in LA the coroner is one of the people that can have people taken against their will and if the family isn't going to go an er and get a psych consult, a pretty reliably way to get it done.

Yes but all that will happen if they even decide to admit against their will is a rapid detox with Valium or Librium and send them on there way.
