re: A/C units in new home roof

Any maintenance or future change out cost are going to be more expensive with it being on the roof. Also, doing an work as the homeowner is going to suck. Simple things like cleaning out the coil is going to be a PITA. You'll probably have to sub that out too. I used to live in Lakeview (moved the spring of 05!) so I'm familiar with the "reach out your bathroom window and touch your neighbor". Make sure you have enough room to get a lift back there before you even contemplate that choice. FWIW: My a/c unit at my camp is raised 6 feet and I wish it wasn't. It makes any service a PITA.

Yeah, im not advocating for it, just saying it is done. Probably a lot of reasons its not done across the south.

Have it done at our house in Lakeview. It is a cut out on the back/side roof line that can only be seen on the side by my neighbors house. Its not ideal but better than looking at two units and a generator in my backyard (which isn't very big to begin with).

Roof is ok but will be a service PITA. The new condenser units aren't that loud and decent windows will help block out the sound. You can get better Windows with thicker laminated glass on that part of the house too.

Allows you to have zone heating and cooling which is a big time money saver. I have the mini-splits in my apartment here in the caribbean and they are awesome. All the benefits of a window unit without the ugly window unit. I can shut the door to my bedroom and turn on the ac in there and keep it freezing as I sleep and leave the windows open in the rest of the apartment and not waste money cooling space that I am not using.

they are always on the roof in Arizona for efficiency- When we lived there I never gave it a second thought- buried on the roof and you can only see it when you are in the backyard

We had a unit outside our master BR and I loved it . The noise cancelled traffic and neighborhood noise

Beware. If your "designer" forgot about AC units in NOLA then you probably have bigger problems in your future. Its not exactly a small detail that was overlooked.

The same thing happened in '05 when they were on the ground. They look funny lifted the way they are making them do it now.
I've always wondered about the solar panels on the roof in 20x40' blocks, what happens to them?
