I'm sure you remember that area being decent as well. We used to frequent businesses on Plank in the 1980s.

Its one of the few places they're allowed to loiter and there's generally a pretty big parking lot. Plus it's close to vital supplies like hot fries and blunt wrappers.

I remember being decent, but it was already turning bad in the 90's. As far back as I can remember, Plank Road hookers were the thing it was most know for. Plank Road hookers.

Top three reasons in order:
Alcohol, cigarettes, and drug paraphernalia are sold here. People out in that world constantly need any one of these through out the night.
Clubs close at 2am. Security outside the club and witnesses sometimes deter fights. Relocate to the nearest gas station to settle it.
Women. Every hard leg that just struck out at the club is hoping to come across one last wounded zebra crossing the nile and snatch her up for the rest of the evening.
Gas stations are a honey hole for inner city crime fighting. I seized countless weapons and made a bunch of decent narcotics cases when I was a Patrol Officer just by walking around gas station parking lots and looking into vehicles from the exterior. Plain view/plain smell doctrine cost them almost every time.
Those days of aggressive, pro active policing are long gone in this city. It's not worth the effort and the risk is to great under the current climate.

Same here. Used to walk to KK in the wee hours of the morning when friends and I would camp out, just to get the first early morning batch off the conveyor.
If your family had a business in that area, I probably knew them or at least knew of them.
