quote:40 to 50 would require nearly permanent care.
Am I thinking 80 is lower than it actually is? And mentally retarded people are 40-50 IQ?
I don't know the source but this chart:
shows the distribution. 40 is so rare it doesn't make the chart.
Edit- picture broke. This one shows something similar:

20 is the standard deviation, I believe.
80, almost minimally retarded
100, average
120, idk but not a dummy.

80- Happy to just make bare minimum, watch your tv shows, and eat. Desire nothing higher in life.
100- Driven, hungry for more but not sure how to do it
120- Always seeking something higher and more meaningful. Likely depressed because you understand life is limited by resources
140- Your mind is so busy thinking about math that you never have time to think about sex.

I've heard that 80 is a moron and 100 is average high school grad. 120 to 100 is simply the difference between a high school graduate vs a college graduate.
80
100
120
140

I did not think about that part of the joke. That's just a line I use for self-deprecation.

Ignoring the detail of your post and addressing the broad issue:
Let's use football knowledge as an example. I know more than the average person about football. Quite a bit more, actually. I can point out pre-snap mismatches, explain why certain plays are more likely to work in certain situations, etc, etc, etc. To a football neophyte, I sound like I know everything there is to know about football.
Put me in a room with Joe Brady and he will immediately be able to identify that, while I might know more than the average idiot, he is operating in a sphere that I couldn't dream of touching. He can easily discern the different between him and me, and me and the neophyte. Yet, if you put said neophyte in the room with me and Joe, said neophyte likely wouldn't be able to tell the difference between me and Joe. They simply don't have the knowledge and background required to do so. They would immediately be able to tell that both me and Joe are leaps and bounds beyond where there are, but that's about it.
It's the same thing with intelligence. The average person can tell when someone is stupid, and they can tell when someone is profoundly dumb. They can chop up those below them on the intelligence scale into neat little boxes. They can also (usually) discern whether someone is more intelligent than they are. But they can't easily discern the relative positioning of those who are more intelligent than they are. But, that idea bothers people, so they use easily available heuristics (generally what someone smarter than them tells them about other people who are smarter than them) to put the more intelligent into the same boxes. But it's why they are so frequently wrong.

That's a fantastic analogy.
