An 8-month-old baby has died after her father left her in his car while he was getting arrested, according to the Snellville Police Department in Georgia.
On Tuesday, 20-year-old Davied Japez McCorry Whatley arrived at the lobby of the police station around 2:17 p.m., the police department said in a press release. He was meeting with the property custodian, but police found a probation violation warrant for his arrest.
He was taken into custody there and transported to Gwinnett County Jail without incident.
Nearly seven hours later, at 9 p.m., an 8-month-old was brought to Piedmont Eastside Emergency Room. Her grandmother, who brought her to the hospital, indicated she was left in a car after a traffic stop. The hospital staff determined the baby was dead.
She was Whatley's daughter.
A Snellville Police Sergeant, who was working off-duty at the hospital, was told by staff.
Police found Whatley's 2007 Mazda 3 in the parking lot of Snellville City Hall, which is near the police station.
Whatley's entire interaction at the police station – from entering the lobby to going to the county jail – was recorded on body camera, police said. He never mentioned that his infant daughter was in his vehicle.
The Snellville Police Department has requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigations take over as the primary investigating agency for this case. CBS News has reached out to the bureau for more information and is awaiting response. The child's cause of death was not released.

Is it protocol for an officer to check vehicle if taking a person into custody? I would think so.
ETA: Nevermind I realize he drove to the station and walked in. My bad.

He walked into the police station, he wasn't pulled over so I wouldn't assume a cop would go searching for his vehicle.

It wasn't a traffic stop. The perp drove to the police station and parked his car.

this is 98% all on the cops, every traffic stop the car is searched and towed and everything in it is inventoried.
cops should be charged with the babies death here. that said yes he should have said something but then he had no reason to think they would leave his kid locked in a hot car on the side of the road, no reasonable person would

This is unclear. Did the guy show up at the police station on his own accord, or was he stopped while driving and the child was left in the car after the stop?

ETA: some people are heavily intoxicated by drugs or alcohol and may not think clearly to remember they have someone in the car with them. Sure they are the f’n idiots but I would think the officer would check the car before leaving it abondoned.
and i guess protocol is for you to not actual read and comprehend what's going on here.

It's clear that the grandmother lied/misspoke when she said she was left in the car after a traffic stop. It's pretty clear the father was not arrested after a traffic stop.

Democrats are ok with this, basically an abortion.

The police later confirmed that the child was left in the parked car at the police station while Davied entered the station for the meeting with the property custodian.
