No it didn’t work because you have to be extremely disciplined to do online learning and most kids aren’t.

Sounds like your private school just had bad teachers.

My subject doesn’t utilize a ‘textbook’.

Can anybody teach? Sure. Not many people can do it well, though. I could do your job with a blindfold on. Your logic suggests that it doesn’t matter if I could it well or not.

It is a legitimate issue, so don't try to downplay it.

And it hates them uniformly.

The groupthink on the OT might not be as comprehensive as it is on politalk, but anything that runs counter to that groupthink is definitely responded to with more viciousness here.

I’m not downplaying the issue, I’m downplaying the opposing views in this thread. It’s littered with ‘anybody can do this job’ comments. Simple-minded viewpoints like that reveal the ignorance that is so prevalent when discussing the teaching profession.

Equally dumb.

What annoys me is that the left is content to let the teacher unions take full control of this issue while giving absolutely no consideration to working parents, IEP children, or young children who are completely incompatible with online school.

They are polling a portion of a portion of all teachers. Their membership is, how can I say this, a tad left in terms of political ideology. I would imagine the design of the poll allowed for a desired outcome. In short, the results of this poll are unsurprising.

From day 1 I have wanted school to be fully open.

In short, do your job, or quit/retire so someone else can.

Fair enough, but, as a parent, the care for your child is your responsibility, not the school's. Everyone has to make sacrifices.

Except for COVID it seems...

quote:

the AAP strongly advocates that all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school.

quote:

Policy makers must also consider the mounting evidence regarding COVID-19 in children and adolescents, including the role they may play in transmission of the infection. SARS-CoV-2 appears to behave differently in children and adolescents than other common respiratory viruses, such as influenza, on which much of the current guidance regarding school closures is based. Although children and adolescents play a major role in amplifying influenza outbreaks, to date, this does not appear to be the case with SARS-CoV-2. Although many questions remain, the preponderance of evidence indicates that children and adolescents are less likely to be symptomatic and less likely to have severe disease resulting from SARS-CoV-2 infection. In addition, children may be less likely to become infected and to spread infection. Policies to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 within schools must be balanced with the known harms to children, adolescents, families, and the community by keeping children at home.

Those same recommendations also say things like this:

quote:

Given what is known about transmission dynamics, adults and adult staff within schools should attempt to maintain a distance of 6 feet from other persons as much as possible, particularly around other adult staff.

Which means they've clearly never been in a K-5 classroom with a teacher and an assistant.

quote:

Parents should, in general, be discouraged from entering the school building.

Or dealt with parents.

quote:

Physical barriers, such as plexiglass, should be considered in reception areas and employee workspaces where the environment does not accommodate physical distancing, and congregating in shared spaces, such as staff lounge areas, should be discouraged.

Or worked with a public school budget.

Not in this case. That’s a lie

There hasn’t been a single documented case in the world of a student passing COVID-19 to a teacher. Provide a link to one. Provide a link to a study showing students passing COVID-19 to a teacher.

You can't tell me that this isn't possible without much effort within a school.

quote:

Parents should, in general, be discouraged from entering the school building.

This was already in place at each of my kid's schools.

Physical barriers, such as plexiglass, should be considered in reception areas and employee workspaces

Also at each of my kid's schools there is already a physical barrier, typically glass of some sort.

And your kids go public?

Because our district had to spend half of its CARES money on masks alone.

Yes, they go to a public school.

My wife made each of my kids 5 masks to wear during the week for school. They were all very excited about going back and seeing their friends even my oldest who is somewhat of a hermit.

Nope. There have been other studies of Isreal showing that the teachers themselves transmitted COVID-19 to each other, not the children.

let me grab a link.

Does anyone know if there was a poll about how comfortable teachers were during the 2018 Flu Epidemic which saw Governor Kay Ivey declare a state of emergency in Alabama, our hospitals overwhelmed with flu cases and, roughly 650 children die across the country?

ScHoOl IsN't DaYcArE

It is a completely out of touch statement in today's world of two working parent households. Great, school isn't supposed to be daycare. Now lets have a discussion that is rooted in reality.
