No way it was 5lbs low and still cooling. You should see a difference after losing 2.5 or 3 lbs.

FYI R22 is going for 100 per lb all day here

How are sellers on ebay selling R22 for less than $20 lb? I'm asking price wise not the legality of it

A ebay seller since 2006 doesn't sell 1000s of cylinders of freon and have a 99.7% positive feedback selling fake freon

OP,

If you were 5 low and a 7lb and not frozen over..I dont know how thats possible. You should have DEF noticed a difference this summer with that much being low.

Did he show you how you were 5 over? BC I think you got scammed personally.

I have an r22 unit and my baw hooks me up at $45 dollars a LB YESSIR. I have a leak in my coil, he came over and put leak stop in the system and it has worked wonders.

Was thinking I was about to come out of pocket for 1300-1500 and im only out a few lbs of r22 Outside unit is a Rheem /Attic is a York

I know they make a lot upgrading units. They not only make the money for upgrading they pull out the old 22 which can be reused.

Seriously you need to look at replacing the old unit with a new one. They are much more efficient these days and that will save on your bill.

Except when you have a variable speed blower that goes out, and the part costs $800-$1000. Carrier Sucks. Am I bitter? Yes lol

I agree there’s no way it needed 5 lbs or it would have stopped cooling and the evap coils frozen up. They literally ice up on the outside, I’ve had that happen multiple times just 2-3 lbs low.

Pretty sure you answered your own question. People sell a lot of thing illegally.

I don't pay for R22 my customers have to, well I do but you see where I'm going. I couldn't care less how much it cost. I have no control over it, that is the EPA's dept. companies like mine have to deal with it. I find it's an easy selling tool.
The EPA is involved regulating the production of R22 in the USA this is what drives up the cost. Providing I wanted a container shipped from some 3rd world country I could probably get here for less than 15.00 a jug however that would be unlawful;) The high cost of R22 puts the consumer in a bind when looking at a repair. Say your system has 11 lb refrigerant charge, do that math then add in the repair. This usually ends up being a discussion about being half way to a new system.

Providing the system is in good repair. I would suggest the 407c alternative. This puts the client in a better position vs. over a barrel so to speak. This is of course is if their R22 system has a TXV metering devise. Providing their R22 system has a piston and the condenser is the problem I'm flushing the line set and throwing a R410a condenser out there and calling it a day.

if you can wait until winter starts the hvac dealers are much slower and have better pricing.

As far as I know, I don't think they reuse the freon. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but a recovery device is so that it doesn't go into the atmosphere.

Also as already said OP HVAC refrigerant systems are closed systems, refrigerant doesn’t wear out or get used. It theoretically should last forever. If you need Freon, it’s because it leaked out. You should absolutely never have it replaced until the leak is found. Now I’ve put in new Freon until the new part that is leaking arrived so I had cool air in the meantime knowing I’d have to add some again. But that’s different.

If any tech simply adds Freon without telling you they found a leak, you should absolutely refuse to pay. Very likely a scam.

You can't convert an AC system from R-22 to R-410A. They are not compatible with each other. Below is the link to this article

LINK

quote:

R410A (sometimes known as Puron), is the industry's choice to replace R-22 in central air conditioning systems. It is less reactive with the environment while having the same home cooling characteristics of R-22. R410A is not interchangeable with R-22—you choose one or the other and your air cooling equipment is designed to operate with it. When you purchase a R-410A system, a new line set is included with your central air installation as well as a new evaporator coil. Our experience with R-410A has been excellent. New cooling systems have been dependable and efficient, as well as operating quieter!

R-410A is the refrigerant of the future!
Less reactive with the environment
Replaces R-22 in the year 2020
Cannot be used with R-22 systems
Quiet and dependable

They just flushed the lines on mine when they put in the new 410A unit. They said that is all they have been doing and it's fine.

Carrier is your problem. Don't you have any warranty?
