5-month old bird flew 8,425 miles from Alaska to Australia with zero stops over 11 days

Reminds me of the poem by D.H. Lawrence that is quoted at the end of G..I. Jane:
I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself.
Animals are amazing creatures and they will endure whatever they have to in order to survive.

Was it a male bird or a female bird? And did it stop to ask for directions over the islands it crossed..
The animal kingdom is full of creatures that have a unique sense of direction and survival instincts to fly across the equator knowing winter is coming in this region and to fly North or South before it gets too cold or weather patterns change making the trip harder to accomplish.

How would anyone actually know this?
Did someone follow the bird? Does this bird have a tracking device on?

Tracking tech is amazing now partly due to satellite and cellular communications. One company makes a tag so small that it can be put on a butterfly. LINK
Another tech for tracking flocks of birds is radar ornithology. It's all about signal processing using nation-wide weather radar as the data source. Who might might be interested in looking for the miniscule radio echo of birds? Maybe people looking for the "bird-sized" radar signal of a stealth plane.

Some birds can sleep while flying (half the brain sleeps at a time), probably got water from rain, and I'm guessing there was a pretty good tailwind somewhere along the way
