This sounds like there is more to the story, or the mom played some role that hasn't been confirmed yet... like inviting the kid in to buy drugs then shite went wrong.

If Mom was at home she would have probably heard the murderer bust into her house and the child screaming as he was being dragged away. Maybe she left the kids alone and unsupervised?

I'd murder that person if it was my kid. I don't care how hard it would be to murder someone in jail, but I'd do it.
