At school during lunch. The principal came on the intercom and told us what happened. She was crying. Went home and watched the news as they replayed the explosion about 1000 times. Not long after, the Challenger jokes started at school. I guess kids have always been cruel little shits.

In grad school at Auburn.

Aerospace Engineering. At least one of the professors was involved with the Shuttle program IIRC.

Sad day.

First National Bank of Edinburg, Texas. I was auditing them for KPMG. Really tough day as I'm a child of NASA (dad worked there for some time) and I grew up there during the Gemini and Apollo programs. Went to school with astronaut's kids and most of the dads on our street worked at NASA.

Goose hunting in a harvested grain field outside Lubbock. We heard a tremendous explosion in the dark. The guide got a call and informed us.

I wasn't 4 yet so I don't remember Challenger exploding so much as I remember Discovery. The shuttle launch 2.5 years after Challenger. They took us all out of our classrooms to watch and all the teachers were nervous and holding hands. I remember it being confusing to all of us why teachers were tearing up just watching a rocket take off.

Maybe a tad too descriptive...Next time try to say something like "I wasn't born yet."

I didn't realize it at the time, but the passenger compartment never exploded. It was intact and can be seen falling towards the ground. Horrific.

I didn't know about it until years later, but the crew compartment sheared off right at the bulkhead.

No one knows how long they survived or were conscious but some of the emergency systems were manually activated. It has been said that they could have survived until impact with the ocean surface... just have to pray that they were unconscious before that point.

5th grade classroom - it was science fair day - my project was on the history of flight - from the wright brothers to a clean record for nasa - that went to hell - on a lighter note my teacher was the grandmother of my wife of 25 years....

The crew cabin was in free fall for 2 minutes and 45 seconds. It’s horrifying to think what that would have been like.

6th grade. The teacher had left us to watch in another classroom that had a television. She came back teary eyed and told the class what had happened.
