If it were $1.3 or above I'd have some suggestions but can't help, sorry.

If I leave chicago, these are the two cities on the short list.
Though I would need to gather some intel on what actually living in Charleston is like, and what the people in the very deep south are like.

Charlotte.
2.5hr drive to the beach or the mountains. Airport that is a major hub, and extremely easy to use.
$1M will buy you a decent house in the heart of Myers park or north of the city on Lake Norman.

No sir. While I love it here and have for 30 years, Not really a place I think would be conducive to raising a young family. While the budget the OP stated would allow for some nice areas, the transient nature of our city would mean meeting new neighbors in those areas about every other year. Not a real community feel. Someone said Naples and I whole-heatedly agree. Cape Coral is nice as well.

That's where my brother lives and my dad does his winters. While it's a great town and there are some decent areas, it's an incredibly sleepy, quiet town, with not a ton of great restaurants, nightlife, entertainment. While a smaller city, I'd lean toward Ft Myers in that area.
Could get a nice place on a canal with gulf access, with a pool. Not too shabby.

Buddy lives there and likes it, for most of the reasons you mentioned. Pretty quick access to all sorts of cool stuff, beach, mountains, other cities like Charleston, Asheville...
Lake Norman looks awesome, but $$$$$.

For all of you saying Charleston you clearly haven't been down there lately.
I assume you're talking about Mount Pleasant area. Otherwise the demographics aren't any different than anywhere else in the South. Even then you're dealing with pain in the arse traffic throughout all warm weather months and TONS of yankees and tourists. Everything is overpriced. You can only fit so many people around that peninsula. It's basically turning into D.C.

The term "Deep South" is defined in a variety of ways: Most definitions include the states Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Arkansas is sometimes included or else considered "in the Peripheral or Rim South rather than the Deep South."

Why did you decide to bump this thread?
Posted on 4/6/17 at 3:03 pm to Epic Cajun
I was doing a search for Charleston the other day. Wanted to get some thoughts, but didn't want to start a new thread...yet, at least.

Yeah, I lived in charleston for about 10 years and everyone I speak to that still lives there tells me that it's changing so much...and not in a good way. They say the peninsula is WAY over populated, housing prices are exorbitant. Mount Pleasant is nice though.
