You know what's way scarier than Nuclear War? Financial instability. If you lose your job, you don't just suddenly vaporize, you have to figure out how to make shite work in the short/long term. You can easily slip from middle class lifestyle down to couch surfing or moving back in with mom & dad in a heartbeat if you're not prepared, and it is difficult to have much runway saved up when you're still in your 20's.
Nuclear War isn't scary, in my opinion, unless you live somewhere on the fringes of a blast zone where you'll have to limp away from the holocaust that follows.
This post tells me you didn’t live through the Cold War. I say that because if you had, you’d realize most people still had all the financial worries you listed along with the added bonus of potentially being vaporized in nuclear hellfire or being plunged into nuclear winter then waiting to slowly die of a mix of starvation and radiation sickness on any given day.

Yeah they only tried their hardest to give their children what they didn't have. I can't really blame them for that. I think most of us would and still do that. We just weren't born in the 50s.

You do realize this never went away, right? Thankfully, my generation was prepped by endless movies and video games about post-apocalyptic zombie and nuclear wastelands.
Like I said, if you live near a nuclear target, getting vaporized isn't stressful. Existence just ends, and there is nothing you can do about it. You don't have to worry about instantaneous death. If you're in a rural area, you don't worry about it because you already have a stocked pantry, ample ammunition, and grow much of your own food. Nuclear strike is only scary for the suburbs where you might limp away only to freak out because you don't have running water, supermarket with quinua in stock, and electricity. No running water or electricity was an average Tuesday in my household growing up. That shite's not scary to me.
I am scared shitless over not being able to pay my bills, not being able to land a good job, over-extending myself, losing my current job, etc. There are real consequences both financially and socially that don't end instantly but linger for years or even decades.
If you live in a city, nuclear war is like being a bomb tech. Either you cut the right wire or it's suddenly not your problem anymore.
