That's just a simple correlation, of course, and it's well documented that many factors beyond immigration can affect the crime rate. So Light and Miller ran a number of statistical analyses to more clearly isolate the effects of illegal immigration from those other factors. There is a practical argument, in that "if ____ weren't here illegally, they would be physically enable to commit _______ (whatever crime they committed)."

The issue is that this isn't the argument, instead it's basically holding up isolated criminal activity to try and convince the gullible that immigrants are particularly violent in nature. Demonization, which isn't really necessary.
