Is this a good watch at $229? If not, what would you recommend in a similar style/price range?
I've always been an advocate of buying what you like. It's in a price range that isn't a deal breaker by any means so I say do it. But get the Roman Numeral version, not the diamoniques.

Agreed on all fronts. I only put the diamond version on there to show some sort of variation in style.

Broke, been looking at a watch for my son's birthday. The Orient Mako is what I think he would like, but where can I get the one with red and blue for $160?

I think you can do much better than that price though. There are tons of great dress watches for around $100. Like these:
$82 on amazon
$87 on amazon

I'd get the two citizen's. They're great watches.

Yeah, I found those just the only new ones I found in that price had the rubber band.
Thanks for your help though.

You can buy a $5 spring bar tool and change out straps and bands all you want.

MVMT are decent watches. I purchased a 45, and 40 MM. They do offer many different kinds of bands and they are really easy to change out. Price range $95-$120. At work sorry no pics. Links to both though...

I can't read another post in this thread without pointing out something. It's making me crazy.
People, a pile of Seiko watches are Seikos, not Seiko's.

I'd wear that Timex. 30 bucks, why not? I prefer the leather band as well.
Hell man, you sucked a dick for a half gram of blow.

Those are nice as well. I just checked Amazon and the one I liked was about $150 on there, which is still almost double the two you posted. I much prefer a brown leather band than a black one, but I see where you are saying it's inexpensive to change them out.
