Aug. 2, 1990 Saddam Hussain invaded Kuwait with an army of close to 90,000. Within hours the royal family of Kuwait had fled to Saudi Arabia, the capital had fallen, and the country was under the total control of Iraqi forces. This move was immediately condemned by the US and prompted the First Gulf War, also known as Operation Desert Shield /Desert Storm.

In the long run he probably regrets that decision.

And a series of events would begin that would lead to 9/11, the second invasion of Iraq, ISIS, endless war and all that.

When it first broke, that was some entertaining television. Stayed up all night the first night watching that stuff.

I remember the day the invasion happened. I was in Germany at the time in the motor pool and we were in the middle of pulling our daily PMCS on our tank. My platoon Sargent came in and told us Iraq had just invaded Kuwait and more than likely this was going to lead to WWIII and we’d all more than likely be dead within a month. He was convinced this was the opening shots and soon the Russians would jump in and all hell would break lose.

What a simpler time for Saddam. Little Uday and Qusay running around dropping people out of helicopters. I bet he wishes he could do it one more time.

Instead, we would just incredibly piss off Osama by stationing troops in the Muslim Holy Land.

I was at work when Bush made the announcement. I wondered if this was the start of WW3.

I’ve never understood why that pissed him off so bad. The Saudis & Kuwaitis’ asked us to come to kick Saddam’s arse. And it was truly an international coalition. It wasn’t just us. There were even Muslim forces in the coalition. Egypt, Malaysia, Morocco, Niger, Pakistan, Qatar, Senegal, Turkey, UAE, and even Syria (yes, SYRIA) all were part of the coalition and took part in the fighting.

B/c the Saudis turned him down when he offered his assistance. He actually met with the Saudi king I believe and offered his own troops.

SCUDS! Watching Wolf Blitzer hide behind a balcony rail with a gas mask was entertaining as well as the black guy for CNN.
