I’ve never understood why that pissed him off so bad. The Saudis & Kuwaitis’ asked us to come to kick Saddam’s arse. And it was truly an international coalition. It wasn’t just us. There were even Muslim forces in the coalition. Egypt, Malaysia, Morocco, Niger, Pakistan, Qatar, Senegal, Turkey, UAE, and even Syria (yes, SYRIA) all were part of the coalition and took part in the fighting.

No need to be racist

Because the Saudi king turned him down on his offer to use his guys to fight. He saw it as a great dishonor to have westerners come defend Kuwait for SA. He thought it should have been Muslims doing the fighting. With the benefit of hindsight, he was probably right.

I was in the woods in Camp McCall, North Carolina when this happened. I was part of the "guerrilla" force for Robin Sage. The ops sergeant, a guy named Sgt.Cheeseman woke us up around 2am and said "get back to your units, we are likely deploying. Someone asked "what the hell happened". He said "Iraq invaded Kuwait". I remember thinking "where the hell are these places". I knew they were in the middle east but 18 year old me probably couldn't have picked them out on a map.

I was part of the 18th Airborne Corps rapid deployment contingency but I still didn't think it was legit because we ran exercises ALL THE TIME. I got dropped off and walked in to the back door of the company area. When I made it in the room there were two folks from the company loading magazines against the ping pong table using stripper clips. I knew at that point it was serious.

I spent that day going through "Battalion" getting all the needed shots and other stuff and making the final stop to ensure my beneficiary was correct on my insurance. Once my squad was done we grabbed as much ammo as we wanted to carry and jumped in a truck heading to "Green Ramp". My LT was looking freaked out so I asked " Hey LT, what's it look like"? He said "not good, the Iraqi's have a large army on the border and they are probably going to invade Saudi". "If that happens, we have no heavy weapons and a lot of us aren't coming home". It was raining on the trip over to Green Ramp and I remember thinking "what did I sign up for".

We didn't lose anyone from my company, thank God.

And a series of events would begin that would lead to 9/11, the second invasion of Iraq, ISIS, endless war and all that.

I was 8 at the time of the invasion. Probably not a thing now, but boys back then would collect trading cards with US tanks and planes on them. The stealth bomber was obviously the most coveted. I recall staying up late to watch 'highlights' of the fighting, hoping to see the same equipment I had on my cards.

What really sucks is I had a cigar box full of pictures from my time in Germany and the Middle East. Also had a lot of pictures from high school as well. When I first come home I stayed with my brother until I could find a place of my own. When I moved out I’d forgot I’d left the box in the top of the closet in his extra bedroom. More than once I thought about getting the box of pictures but would forget to do so when I was over there. Then his place burned and all of my pictures were lost. I wish I could get those back.

I actually switched over to being a red leg myself following the Gulf War. The guard unit I joined after I came off active duty was armor, which was perfect for me because I was a 19 Kilo. But around 97 they transitioned to artillery. So I had to go through 13B Q School and spent my last 2 years on an M109.

What’s funny is that by 1999 we were starting to get use to the change and were pretty damn good at the field artillery thing. But then the army decided it was time to change again so they said my battalion would transition to chemical. My enlistment was coming up so I told them there was no damn way I was gonna be chemical. Thus ended my military career.

I was on leave in St. Louis visiting my girlfriends family (she was on leave from Japan) and I remember watching it on tv. Two weeks later I was part of a chase crew in a C-130 as my squadron deployed, first to Bahrain, and then to King Abdul Aziz, a soccer stadium the King for for his military team.
