SCUDS!

I remember this was the one thing our officers were worried about before we launched the ground war. They were worried as soon as we crossed the berm the Iraqis would launch hundreds of SCUDS with chemical warheads right at us. Turns out I personally never saw the first SCUD. But they did score a lucky hit on an American barracks in Dhahran that killed & wounded over 100 rear echelon national guard troops.

when we got our first few MD-11s there were so many problems with them that our mechanics began to refer to them as SCUDs, they may take off but you never know where they're going to land

I remember getting admonished as a 2nd/3rd grade child for making a Scud joke in class after loud thunder during a thunderstorm.

The one rocket I did see in both flight and impact was the MLRS. I remember we were approaching a position of dug in battalion size unit of armor & infantry and saw a MLRS salvo come in on their heads. Needless to say, it was a bad day for them.

Not really... Our support of Israel and general involvement in the middle east is what lead to 9/11..

1st Gulf War did probably accelerate the inevitable tho...

I was about to start sixth grade and remember being at my grandparent's house, watching the news about this. I distinctly remember my grandfather saying we would be going to war over it.

Saddam contributed the most to “climate change” than any individual ever.

Story has it that Kuwait was drilling high angled wells (directional wells weren’t really a thing back then) near the border with Iraq that was producing oil from formations below Iraq as well that really pissed Saddam off.

So Saddam invaded and his troops destroyed almost all the oil wells in Kuwait.

The world consumes around 95-98 million barrels of oil a day.

quote:

It is estimated about 1 to 1.5 billion barrels of oil were released into the environment as a result of the fires. Specifically, about 25 to 40 million barrels ended up spread across the desert, while 11 million barrels ended up in the Persian Gulf. The oil well fires produced layers of soot and oil that fell from the sky and then mixed with sand and gravel, covering about 5% of Kuwait’s landscape. Additionally, the fires created plumes of smoke, containing a hazardous mixture of emissions and particulate matter including but not limited to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic hydrocarbons, hydrogen sulfide, and acidic gases. Furthermore, a number of these emissions are carcinogenic, or cancer-causing, and therefore dangerous to human health. These clouds of smoke often remained low to the ground, surrounding U.S. military personnel. Ultimately, it required the help of 11,450 workers from 38 different countries to extinguish the oil well fires. Approximately 90% of the fires were put out using seawater. This devastation resulted in substantial environmental and economic damages.

didn't help, but with those fanatical over zealous ragheads, and their hatred for us, it was almost inevitable

that was such a one-sided arse kicking and taking names display of military might and capability that it just goes to show the unstable, irrational "thinking" of their "leadership," sane minds would have thought "hell to the nah, we don't won't no more of that shite," but then again, they weren't actually in the line of fire, old man Bush taking his foot off the gas pedal a little early didn't help either

MD-11s are hard to land perfectly on. They keep bouncing after touching down because of their flawed center of gravity point.

Must Kuwait citizens still love the US for liberating them.

I was on a flight to Kuwait once and when I told my neighbor I was American he shook my hand and said "thank you for giving us our country back".

Was a pretty cool experience.

We were only a little over 100 miles from Baghdad when the ear fire order came down. And there wasn’t jack shite between us and there. If Bush daddy had let us keep on fighting at most another 48 hours, the second Gulf War may have never happened.
