Those companies already give the data to the government.
Government already had mine from joining the service even though they pinkie promised not to use it for anything other than IDing remains (yeah right).

If my account was hacked they have fake initials and a throwaway email account. I suppose they could still figure out who I am through my dna matches but I carry around an electronic device every day that already tells them way too much about me so I'm not overly concerned about this.

Well who cares if they get your DNA information….it is completely anonymous. I have never given them my name….

Those hackers are going to see what we’ve unfortunately known for too long-

You mean Hollywood screenwriters or real life?

I’ve left so much dna in so many different places, it’s a miracle I haven’t been falsely accused of every crime in 40 states and parts of the Virgin Islands. Why try to make use of hacked dna file when a cotton swab would be more discrete?

Can’t believe so many cucks willingly signed up for these things. Was pissed when I found out my sister did

There are some tin foilers around here. If the fuzz wants your DNA they’ll get it by easier methods. The laziness of people with their passwords, CC info and SSN or getting phished is a far greater danger for most people.

And I’m not sure being interested in your ancestry, geography of ancestors, etc is really being a “cuck.” lol.

Worked out well for me. My dad was adopted and didn't find out until shortly before his death and never had a chance to find out where he came from. I didn't have any luck tracking down his records from the 50's and signed up as a last resort. I immediately matched up with a first cousin on that side and she connected me with his seven living siblings (he was the 9th, hence the adoption) who had always wondered what had become of him as they knew he was adopted off their whole lives. I've since been out to visit twice and it's been a pretty cool experience. No regrats.

Frankly, I find all this hand-wringing about privacy by a bunch of people that likely communicate, bank on, store sensitive information in, and carry a smart phone around with them everywhere they go a bit over-the-top.

Oh, and if my DNA outs any of my family members as a serial killer or a rapist, frick 'em.

They didn't get suspicious when 6.9 million users started downloading data?

what's a reasonable worst case scenario if someone gets a hold of your DNA?

They will clone you and use your doppelgänger to commit some atrocity. Then they will dispatch your clone, free you from their black ops site and let you face the consequences.

And what bad would happen to you?

There is nothing more private than your genetic make up. DNA is literally the recipe for every cell in your body. Not too mention it proves connection to multitudes of other people. In today’s world, at this very moment, the risk may be abbreviated BUT what if it was determined that a certain allele found in a subset of the population could cause rapid disease spread? A govt could absolutely start imprison or quarantine that subset.

It is foolish to think that information shouldn’t be protected when your health records are.

Edit: Other possible scenarios? I am wealthy and need heart and lungs for transplant and I know you match.

Eugenics.

Use of a human body for cell growth or regeneration.

The possibilities are endless because we don’t know what tech hits next.

Who is gonna call me paranoid again for not wanting to willingly give my DNA to these type outfits?

If not hacked, they'll just sell it.

I am not a paranoid person - at all - and I have always said these are a terrible fricking idea. Nothing more personal than your DNA and it has to be assumed if these websites have it, at the very least the US government has it and likely larger corporations they sell it to.

We are not far from making humans in labs.

Also, I don't want to snitch on my grandkids if they ever rob a bank and leave DNA behind

Are we mad at 23and Me because individuals used the same password on other sites that were hacked? It’s not like 23andMe was compromised

Yeah, not a 23andMe problem.

Sure, could make a more robust question section, but this is on the user.
